The production on this is crazy good, had to listen in my car at full blast with the windows down to confirm

I still can’t get over the fact that I’m listening to a new HUM album in 2020, I honestly never dared to hope that this would actually see a release. It’s everything I could have wanted from one of my favourite bands and more.

This is probably the most surprising album drop in the last 22 years lol.

It rules how 72 hours ago I had no aspirations of listening to a new Hum album anytime soon and now it’s all that’s occupied my ears/thoughts since then lol

i love the intro riff to “in the den.” the kind of thing that’s so simple but they elevate it just by being them

I can’t get over Matt’s tone on In the Den, so ridiculously heavy

Also bc I don't think anyone's brought him up yet: Bryan St. Pere is such an underappreciated drummer. He's not as busy or as technical on this as their earlier records (except on Cloud City maybe) but part of the reasons these songs slap as hard as they do, Desert Rambler and The Summoning especially, is bc he plays just a tiny bit behind the beat and lays into the drums so fuckin hard

    hmmm

Sound quality of this album is better and meatier on bandcamp than it is on Spotify. Another reason to buy it on there.

It's harder than people realise to play drums to this sort of music. You have to lay it down powerfully but also leave plenty of space. It's very easy to slightly overplay and take something away from the song but he restrains perfectly while still bringing the power. As you say, playing a touch behind the beat just adds to the feel of heaviness and space. Lovely stuff.

I'm trying to decide how I feel about this... honestly, the drums struck me as kind of weak on first listen, and I haven't fully bought in yet that this fairly vanilla approach is just perfect for the music. Whatever he was doing on the last two records certainly never felt distracting or like overplaying. But at the same time... every song here is slow/midtempo and plodding, so it's not necessarily a fair comparison.

Too many bands with drummers that don’t hit their drums hard enough smh

90% of local bands that suck and don’t get big don’t realize it’s bc their drummer can’t play cleanly and with rimshots

The mornings here in San Diego have been heavy overcast and feels like fall weather. This album is perfect for it.
