It's a number of things. I probably didn't think it was much a problem until it was pointed out. I'm sure I stopped doing it on AP towards the end. I think I just wanted to contribute positively.

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

it's probably hard to gauge the difference with such extremes between the two. right now Chorus is a few months old, with 10k members whereas AP was getting close to its second decade and over 500k members and many wonderful racist, bigoted bots, with many well established users and had a lot of "growing pains" with how to be a complete and utter asshole on an internet forum (when those started and many years later. but we'll always have those i'm sure). not to mention how different the world and culture is from 2016 to whenever AP started (i found it in 2004ish(?) in high school).

i wasn't around for the beginning, but i wonder what the first few months of AP were like. is Chorus exactly like AP was? the exact opposite?

like i said, hard to gauge the end of AP to the start of Chorus evenly, but Chorus has been better in a multitude of tiny ways that add up.

Out of curiousity is there a particular reason people don't visit the homepage as much or at all? I know Jason worked really hard on that so if there's something that can be improved to get people going back to the homepage/make it continue to be worthwhile making editorial content let me know.

I tend to go straight to the Article Discussion forum and browse the threads. I know it was a conscious decision to not have replies on the news posts themselves, but I just end up in Article Discussion anyways to read the comments, so I find myself just hanging out on the forum section of the site.

i always just click on my "most used" icons, which in this case is for the forums. the main page / news of chorus is a different icon. unlike AP, at least for me, was just one icon and took me to the main page of the site.

I'm gonna go to article discussion anyway to see what ppl are saying so I just go straight there. But news posts on AP always had the worst comments and I'm glad it's not nearly as bad now. Also when I first got invited to the site in beta or whatever I bookmarked the forums to remember the site and not the news page so I just type in 'f' as habit. I do look at the news page sometimes but not as often as I did with AP

For whatever reason, I'm way more involved in Chorus. I had about 900 posts in the forums over 8 years or so on AP, and am already approaching that number here. Not that AP was ever a bad experience by any means, but I'm definitely more in tune with chatting with everyone here regularly. Definitely a positive experience so far.

I know for me it's because i got used to coming straight to the forums during the beta. But I check news pretty regularly when I remember.

I actually check the home page a lot with the news. Normally that is the first thing I look at when I come on Chorus.

The mobile version of AP had become unusable, and since I do most of my posting on mobile this site has been a godsend. I had all but stopped checking AP bc of that, now I check Chorus throughout the day.

I sense this too. But I also think people have a short memory and don't hold shit against people unless they're ALWAYS noticeably trashing things. I hold my tongue most of the time when I have something negative or unpopular to say, because I just don't really care that much, but the few times I have said something it's not like there's a nasty backlash. I might get a passive aggressive comment or something, but unless I make a big deal out of it people forget and move on, you know?

I totally forgot about that ordeal. Not trying to put down the people down that were involved by saying that, it just felt like things were said, people up and left, and then the site just moved on and haven't really brought it up much since.

I don't think people moved on as much as people just don't feel like discussing it because discussing it ended up with someone being hurt no matter what.

I'm not either, hahaha. I am the worst at any kind of conflict. Or any kind of human interaction whatsoever but mostly conflict. It took me a bit to think of that response.

I wasn't trying to bring anything back up. Just felt like around that point was when I stopped talking a lot on here and some of that stems from those times. Didn't intend to upset anyone.

I wasn't even all that involved, I just hated how immediately some people who's posts I thought were an important part of the community ended up not feeling comfortable posting.

As far I can tell it's just @Jason Tate posting news, so it's only stuff that's reaching him, I guess? I mean, if Pitchfork (or w/e music site you want to use as an example) only had one person in charge of posting and getting the news, I wouldn't go there either.

The homepage gets a lot of traffic. More than the AP homepage did actually. The segregation of comments in part was to see if more people would want to view a homepage and just have something to read each day without the idea of the comments/community also involved. So far it's been very popular, and the engagement numbers are fantastic. But if you signed up for the forums, odds are you're more interested in that part of the site from the start. So those people most likely aren't homepage readers anyway. They get their news and convos from the forums to begin with.

But yeah, the homepage (or news feed in general) would do 1m pageviews about per month by itself on AP.net. It did 1.7 last month. Full content side did more than the AP content side did for the last year of existence on AP on average. More new people are coming and reading the news and getting updates a few times a day than we saw on AP in a long time.

Edit: I should note that this has, counterintuitively, been done by producing less content. Way less content. But the unique visits and amount of visits for this specific section of the site are way up.

I go to the Article Discussion tab a few times a day just to check on what's been posted. Idk if that counts toward the homepage numbers or not

  21. If it lasts for 12 months, then I wanna send :efu: emojis to all the content farm click bait bottom of the barrel publications full of lists and quizzes used to inflate numbers. Hahhaha. So far the basic idea of: write good stuff and trust people want to read it is working.

Also Blink and Brand New news. And a new Thrice album.

    DO IT. I'll help.

Now you just need new Brand New (and Thursday?) albums. Get on that. "For Chorus."

2016 keeps breaking my heart with tragedies and legends passing and then giving me a reprieve with a fantastic new album. Then we lose another one. It's a cruel, cruel world.

This stems from the mention of the fantastic news and stuff this year for homepage traffic lol I'm random.
