I can agree with this for the most part. I didn't think it was great, but not terrible either. Just surprising, I guess.

Its a thing that doesn't need to exist, and it'll be forgotten next week

I'm playing this Topaz Jones record that was just released. It's really, really good. Definitely worth a listen.

He sounds like every other white rapper on the fucking planet. I swear white guys do the absolute least in this genre and get undeserved praise

I have no idea what people are talking about, he raps exactly like you'd expect from a random actor: shitty.

I mean, I would say that people (myself included) shouldn't watch that video and then only talk about Shia, when Oswin Benjamin who followed him was clearly the better rapper.

White men getting praised for mediocrity is pretty universal haha

I don't really care about freestyling tbh.

Like it's nice.... but now craft me a good song.

I think freestyling is fun in the same sense that improv in comedy is fun. There is a place for freestyling and rehearsed/written raps

EXACTLY. It's like a non-comedy person doing a good Asssscat monolouge or w/e - it's cute. Don't thik he's going to try and make this his career lmao

I feel like it's the kind of thing a lot of you would scoff at, but The Birth of a Nation soundtrack is really great, one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a while. It's an "Inspired by" with a group of performers

Was coming here to post this, one of my buddies from college went to HS with Amine in Portland and showed me this song like right when it came out. Cool to see it get played at Blazer games and all over Portland and now getting some national recognition. Was super impressed with that performance, hope he puts out a good project. Portland needs more of a hip-hop scene.

I think some people are confused about the term freestyling (granted, it has come to mean two different things for no good reason) and about it's relevance to larger Hip Hop music and culture

I mean there are a lot of rappers who don't even pick up a pen and write everything off the top. Thug, Gates, many others. Sure they go back revise but there's still people in the game who can actually do that shit well. But the people who freestyle and come out with that "lyrical miracle" bs aren't impressing anyone but backpackers stuck in a decade they didn't even live in

Yeah he's definitely helping legitimize Portlands rap scene. Lived there forever and all they ever had was Cool Nutz. But Martell Websters label is working to put a legit scene into motion. Amine actually had two people from that label with him on Fallon. Hoping for some big stuff from him

A lot of them write though, just in their head, Jay style. Thug is a whole other story, what I heard about his recording process can't even really be called rapping (I don't mean that in a negative way), it's more like a neverending series of ad-libs.

Also, a good flow outside of the studio is still a good thing, no matter the decade. It's just not everything.

well yeah its different from a true freestyle but its still kind of the same "off top" ethos of the freestyle era

Actual freestyle rapping is actualy pretty vibrant these days, maybe more than ever, it just more seperated from recording artists than it used to be. Same goes for battle rapping.
