Man I got so turned off by Lasers that I never really gave anything beyond it a chance. I really need to carve out some time to listen to his newer records.

Oh I mean I've listened to F&L2. It's whatever, a handful of tracks I like with a ton of filler.

Lupe is just way more listenable than Kendrick for me. I recognize the greatness of albums like TPAB and GKMC but I rarely return to them. There’s a bit of pretension there that’s a turn-off (not to say Lupe isn’t pretentious sometimes too). Lupe’s stuff can achieve the scope of Kendrick albums with less of self-congratulatory experimentation. I also just generally like Lupe’s flow and voice more; Kdot can grate.

I love both, they're both all-timers for me.

I do prefer Lupe a tad more, just because he has more output and has been around longer - but because of that, Lupe has more inconsistency.

Both incredible live performers as well (although again, think Lupe is better live).

I don't see the pretension with Kendrick at all and have never understood when people say that. Yeah, he used a few jazz musicians on TPAB before the recent jazz renaissance, but aside from that, he just makes bloody good hip hop.

The only time I can think of him being “pretentious” would be the concept behind Damn. But honestly that was more on the fanboys reading wayyyyyy too much into it.

    where is Nation?

the biggest negative to kendrick is his desire to tie himself to the nation of islam. nothing having to do with the music or some made up “pretentious” or “self congratulatory” vibes

I just don’t like his voice or the way he uses it. He’s a lot like Eminem in that regard to me. Or Canibus.

I kinda see that but then again 5%ers are responsible for some of the greatest rap ever made so who am I to judge given that that is a nation of islam spin off

He also never made something that made me feel like I hadn’t heard something like this before, unlike say YG

I find the spoken word skits on TPAB to be unbearable, for instance. Most of Untitled. Unmastered. is also very out-there for me. Strange how Damn is being singled out as his "most pretentious" when I find that to be his most accessible/listenable. Also agreed with @The Lucky Moose that his voice/flow brings to mind Eminem at times (which is a huge turnoff for me).

When I listened to Kendrick albums for the first time I never thought that it was sounding like something I had ever heard before. He always sounds new and fresh to me in anything he does.

I can see the "nothing new" argument for GKMC because I feel the same way. That shit was a clear homage to west coast 90s hip hop, and people acted like he invented the genre.

I don't think the skits add much to TPAB but they don't really take away from the record. Worst case scenario I stop listening to Mortal man when the song ends

have never heard anyone say Damn, which is hardly my favorite of his, is pretentious. if anything it’s his most accessible and modern

saying he sounds like eminem is truly baffling

TPAB... was new haha. the entire focus and drive of the album was anger stemming from events occurring in the present.
