I just don't really know what the end goal of this discussion is. Have there been attempts made to talk about hip hop with people on this site who don't fuck with it? Are there still people on this site who are actively pushing back against hip hop?

Again, I think the inclusive nature of this site compared to AP is causing more of the separation than a hatred/dislike of the genre is.

It's tough to get most people on this site to branch out of the select few threads they're in. I tried to do that "Listnd Challenge" at the beginning of quarantine. It had like 4 regular posters in it and fizzled in a week or two.

My best suggestion is to do some sort of "Essential Hip Hop Albums" thread/series of threads in the Music Forum, reach out to the most frequented, popular threads on the site to advertise and to see what happens. I'm willing to bet, though, that it'll fizzle quickly too.

I actually am doing this with someone on this forum currently. That’s always fun.

This Gunna tape is just kinda there. It's fine, nothing is sticking with me. I think that if an artist is going to stick with this same flow that every other popular rapper is using on tracks, at least the beats need to me offer something to latch on to. This isn't really doing that.

I really like the Essential Hip Hop thread, but I’m definitely not the best person to start that. I think that would help.

You really should read Can’t Stop Won’t Stop and The Big Payback, you’d get a kick out of it

Major nostalgia factor. But also, couple jams on Kush & OJ that absolutely still hold up. "The Kid Frankie" nowadays gives me Kamaiyah vibes.

I don’t think an Essential Hip Hop Thread would work because those that would care enough to actually check those albums out would also care enough to either ask here or to just use Google. I’d be work for nothing or almost nothing. Also we’d never agree on a list.

I'm all for an essential hip-hop thread. There's plenty to discover when doing a deep-dive into the genre, as well as would be interesting to see what we come up with as essential

Side note: if we have more individual threads dedicated to hip-hop releases could help?

I think the idea of doing threads for hip hop classic is a great idea. Would anyone else be interested in participating? Could be 80's classics or 90's classics or even modern classics.

I don’t believe in modern classics because of recency bias, stuff like that needs ten years to settle imo.

But again, I don’t think anyone but us here would care and we can just do that here lol

Was just racking my brains trying to remember the name of Can't Stop, Wont Stop and it was bugging me. Thanks for the reminder, been meaning to get that for ages!

So again, my question is: are people not getting into the genre because they don't like it/don't know where to start, or is it just a general disinterest in leaving their specific threads? Like @The Lucky Moose said, people have Google. If they care about the genre and want to get into it, they can easily find a million "best of" lists.

I was thinking of something similar to the favourite albums poll threads for specific bands that I think @Henry does. Not sure if we could get them pinned, but if I were to name it for example:

HIP HOP CLASSICS: Outkast - Aquemini

Or something like that. Obviously start with a big name like Outkast. Andre 3000 has done stuff with Frank Ocean and James Blake, so may have a bit of crossover. Or we could go with say a Beastie Boys album. May get a few of the indie whiteys interested haha

Right. I think it’s the latter. They just don’t want to, for one reason or another. Which is why I think we shouldn’t waste our time.

I mean I'd definitely enjoy revisiting some of the "classics" that I haven't heard in years, so I'm down for the threads for that reason. I'd say for those of who who haven't alienated 80% of the site like I have, reach out to your people and see if they'd be down to participate.

I’m also tired of talking about those admittedly great rap albums that somehow crossed over enough for people like that though lol No shots at the person discovering Outkast just now ;D

Those are always more or less the same 20 albums but I want to talk about the other 80 if that makes sense

I think this is a great idea. If you want to put together the threads, if be more than happy to pin them.

Honestly, I'm running out of poll ideas anyway.

Ha well now we're splitting between two different things, I guess. If the point is for the regs in here to discuss some of the old school albums, we should do the deeper cuts/overlooked tapes. If the point is to be "accessible", we'd probably have to include some of the ones that have been talked to death.

Unless we do a year by year/crew by crew thread. But that'd get messy.

I like the idea of doing a poll for the classics. I also think having a thread designated to experimental hip-hop, and another thread designated to melodic trap, another designated to lyrical stuff... just an idea.

Can already see the meaningless arguments about what constitutes what, lol. I also think that goes back to spreading this thread thin like the specific album threads would.

I say it's worth a go. If it takes off and new people join, cool. If not, we can just go back to posting stuff like "man, why don't we talk more about *insert hip hop artist here* on here?" haha

    Maybe do it every Sunday?

Now the big question... do people trust me to select the album each week? I may need help if we decide to do something from the 2000's, though haha

I don’t know I think there are also regs that would profit from a deep dive into old school recs. That’s not a shot at all either but we definitely broadly have two kinds of regulars, those that already know basically all that stuff to some extent and those that only know some of it which they got to based on osmosis.
