I remember first hearing that song because on the asap mixtape I downloaded that was a bonus track and I’m sad he never had anything as good as that

Is Hip Hop evolution good? I saw season 4 just dropped and they start discussing southern rap music and also the rise of Kanye and 50 cent.

What about the rap competition Netflix show with TI?

I heard Old Man Saxon is on it.

It's very much a reality show. I watched it for Cakes da Killa but ended up finishing it in spite of its many flaws.

Co-signing this lol. It might be enjoyable if you don't care about rap, but i guess you wouldn't be in this thread if that was the case

I love it. As much as I love hip hop, there’s so little I properly know about stuff from different areas and the history behind it. I’m sure there’s more in-depth stuff out there, but it’s good for what it is.

It’s just sometimes superficial to the point where you could argue the things they say are actually wrong

I don’t see that personally, but each to their own.

Which bits in particular did you think could be classed as wrong?

I don’t remember specifics because I only watched the first two seasons back when they came out. I just remember it being so surface level that the narrative they create is so incomplete that, if you ask me, it misrepresents the actual history of hip hop and thereby doesn’t do right by the genre and the artists and other people that shaped it. Also I specifically remember there being half-truths, just not which lol

Like I said, it’s fine, fun even, but it’s really not good or precise enough to be someone’s main source for learning hip hop history, especially if they're a real fan of the genre.

I’ve said it before, but if you really want to know the history as good as you can without having been there, read Can’t Stop Won’t Stop by Jeff Chang and The Big Payback by Dan Charnas. Once you have done that you’ll see what I mean when you watch Hip Hop Evolution.

I get what your saying, but I don’t think it ever claimed to be the definitive guide to all of hip hop. It always came across to me as an entertaining introduction to the basics of each scene and from each timeframe. It’s clearly done by people who have a deep love for the genre too.

As with every documentary on any genre, there’s gonna be bits here and there that are missed. And some that are probably omitted for time reasons. I don’t think any of that takes away from the entertainment it brings.

Yeah I edited my post to include the fact that it is fun for what it is. I also don’t doubt the people behind it love the genre. I still think they could do better, but like I said, it’s fine.

I just think the people in this thread who ask about it should know it’s limitations and look into some alternatives in case they want to seriously learn the history of hip hop. I’m not trying to an ass or anything, I mean well lol

Also it’s of course possible that the more recent seasons are better.
