A lot of artists who have been around for 20+ years probably have a lot of forgettable music. Thats more common than not.

Nobody's Smiling wasn't for me but it certainly wasn't bad. The album before that was great. I think he has around three albums that are questionable, if you incluee Nobody's Smiling. That leaves a lot of great albums.

Really thought Lupe would be passed these problems he used to have now that he's independent. He probably thought that too tbh

I'm seeing him on Wednesday though, hopefully he does some new stuff live

I saw him on the 2013 "Tetsue & Youth Preview Tour" and he played at least 3-4 songs that have never seen the light of day, it's quite weird

I've actually already seen him once this year lol, it was a bad time in my life though and I want to see him again since I'm in a good place now. Plus he was sick that day and performed way shorter than he did for the rest of the tour

Do you mind me asking how long you have been listening to Hip Hop? Besides the obvious exposure to some of it that comes with Hip Hop being everywhere I mean.

I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm genuinely interested, as I suspect that there a lot of people, that up until recently mainly stuck to Alternative or Indie music, have been getting into Hip Hop recently (some would argue to due to the "hipsterfication" of Hip Hop criticism), which in many ways makes their listening experience of the genre very different from people that have been deep into Hip Hop for a long time, both musically and culturally. And someone who has been mainly into Hip Hop music and culture since the age of 12, I occasionally get that feeling when reading some of the opinions on here (which is obviously a place full of people that deeply care about music, otherwise this whole topic would not be interesting to me).

Of course it could just be that you somehow missed this album, haha. In that case, I hope someone else can weigh in.

ya its no problem. so context of my age, im 23. Growing up in white suburbia, the majority of hip-hop people were listening to at the time was all 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, I can't tell you exactly why I never gravitated towards that stuff, but I assume it's cause it was easier for me to relate to blink-182/sum 41/etc. than it was to relate to 50 cent. In grade 7/8 is when I first discovered Lupe's The Cool , which was pretty much the first "hip-hop" album I ever became OBSESSED with. I also got introduced to Kanye around that time. For most of high school then, the only hip-hop i listened to was Kanye + Lupe. Even going into University I wasn't expanding my listening habits too much in terms of hip-hop, I got incredibly obsessed with Earl Sweatshirt, and Kendrick, but beyond that not much else. It's only been the past two-ish years in which I've started listening to a lot more, mainly because I felt the need to diversify my listening habits. I've also been just watching a lot of stuff on hip-hop history which is the main trigger for me wanting to go back and listening to the classics.

I think its just a case of when I was growing up, I was in desperate need to seek out music that I could relate too the most, which being a white suburban male ended up being pop-punk/indie/punk. Its not till I realized the importance of hearing different perspectives and started expanding my horizons that I got more into hip-hop (and all genres for that matter, been getting into classical/RnB/metal/hardcore/etc lately, all of which I used to never even bother trying out).

When it comes to Outkast though, hey yea was such a HUGE song right when I was in elementary school that I don't think anyone realizes they had albums before speakerboxxx/the love below , so for me that was always the album I associated with them. Which is probably why I never listened to any of their old stuff. (Someone at my work today told me "Ya , I love outkasts first album speakerboxxx. When that came out nothing sounded like it at the time.")
