Dre/Snoop, Tupac, 2 Live Crew and Naughty By Nature are the ones that come to mind as my entry way to hip hop.

I remember listening to Tupac on the radio and liking it, but when Dre dropped the Chronic and then a few months later Naughty By Nature dropped 19 Naughty III, I was fully on board. I was only like 9 at the time, but I then found 2 Live Crew's As Naughty as They Wanna Be on vinyl at a garage sale and the cover caught my interest so I put it in a pile with 4-5 other records to hide it and bought it. I remember listening to it over and over again with headphones and putting the actual record in the slip for Thriller so my parent's wouldn't find the cover.

when you look at the albums themselves sure, its a little weird, but when you think about those albums in terms of pure exposure, it makes sense they would usher in new fans to the genre just because those albums were inescapable in their respective years, non fans were undoubtedly curious and checked them out.

    Just a friendly reminder

Only played Vendetta but that game was fun as hell. I spent a long ass time fighting Ludacris, and that was even after reading about his leg submission weakness in Nintendo Power. This was before I could openly admit to myself that I liked rap music but I loved beating the shit out of Joe Budden to the sounds of "Party Up".

In a similar vein, I've spent a long time daydreaming up a hip-hop fighting game in the style of Marvel VS. Capcom and I wish I was stupidly wealthy so I could make it happen.

Ghostface was the best character in that first Def Jam game, with the eagle bracelet

Tough to say what album got me in to rap. Listened to it growing up either through my cousin or my brother, but Black Star was the first rap album I bought myself and really started to become more ingrained in the culture.

I’ve seen this and actually Eminem does have songs people dance to, in Europe at least you’ll hear some of those dumb songs in those corny ass huge clubs in medium sized cities all the time

I really hate Eminem. Like even his early stuff is so bad to me. I feel like this is the only place on the internet where white people won't attack me for saying that.

I never got into Eminem growing up, never did as an older folk either. There are a few standalone tracks I like, but not as an artist overall

I don’t really like any Eminem album (some songs here and there, but not from any of the post-comeback albums), except maybe Infinite kinda, but I can appreciate some of them for what they were/meant and his talent. In general I’m about as annoyed by the relatively recent Eminem hate and revisionist history as I am by people calling him the greatest or whatever.

He’s (was) a pretty masterful storyteller and crushed the extended metaphor/imagery in his early stuff. I just wish it wasn’t so homophobic or misogynistic

Remember he's not homophobic even though he wrote the lyrics of "God Rap"

He did hug Elton John at the Grammys which cured homophobia in rap music forever.

Tbh as a gay guy I realised a while ago that if I stopped listened to every rapper that said the F word occasionally then all it would do is stop me from enjoying this genre. But I would stop listening to a rapper if they were so obviously homophobic in their lyrics as Eminem is.
