i mean i get that much but imo there are more talented and less shitty rappers like earl sweatshirt, kendrick lamar, danny brown, scarface, kanye, kid cudi, logic, who do the same. figure he's just even more heart on his sleeve, probably a bit of underdog syndrome too since he came from soundcloud

he's probably one of the more underrated rappers, at least in that i feel like he doesn't get enough respect these days, particularly given how much southern/Texas hip hop has come up lately

 

If we’re talking why the kids like his music, beyond him as a figure: I’ve been in here saying that, based on my limited exposure, I don’t actually like X’s music at all and that I don’t think he’s really all that talented (before his last album, I think) but I’ve recently heard Jocelyn Flores on the radio and I think that one is interesting musically and quite special, I see why something like that would co-exist with other ”emo rappers”

Definitely, very underrated and way too forgotten even by people who’s job it is to know

 

yeah i guess he's just very focused on the emo rap whereas the other artists, except maybe Kendrick and Earl, don't make mental health a major theme of their music super consistently

 

juice wrld is taking over for the emo rap

i hear him all the time on the radio

 

I liked the first couple Juice WRLD tracks but his album is pretty bad. His feature on Astroworld sounds like budge Swae Lee.

it's dark and frankly gross as hell and im very glad he's moved past that shock jock shtick but goddamn the rhymes on it are nuts

 

That review actually does a really good job of explaining the intent and appeal of the original Odd Future aesthetic.

 

mm, his trajectory/maturation as an artist and person is fascinating and a central reason he's one of my faves

 

The fact that they didn’t review it originally shows why The Levels or whatever they call it is a doomed idea lol

 

this isn't part of the levels tho this is just pitchfork sunday review everything we missed back then.

 

I’ve honestly never really listened to the OF albums unless people are counting Frank. I know that Tyler album from last year was really well received too. Maybe I should start with Earl.

 

Earl's last two albums are great

 

What I mean is that it’s an example of them failing in their hip hop coverage

 

I liked Odd Future at the beginning because I like kids skateboarding in their videos lmao

As far as all the solo stuff goes, it’s cool but I also don’t care, with the exception of Syd, she’s the truth

 

Earl is one of my favourite artists

 

You guys are hip with the kids, all rappers in my top 10 have released at least one album before the year 2000 lol
