How did J Cole get so popular? I'm not hating, I just really don't understand it

 

He makes relatively easy to digest hip hop music with technical skill and something "deeper" than popular artists

 

Multiplatinun with no features might be a meme but it’s also true. He has been huge for years.

 

I listened to the album and thought it was ok. I just never find his music very memorable, it's just kinda there

 

Being just kind of there doesn’t hurt it on popularity

 

No way he holds that record for very long. I get that he’s popular but he’s not Drake popular, or Kanye, or probably a bunch of other people who are releasing this year

 

He just broke the record held by a Drake album - one the last Drake album did not break - so doesn’t that mean he’s like equally popular? As an album artist he definitely is. Drake just happens to also make songs for the radio, which Cole has abandoned.

 

I don’t think this is true because of the speed at which Apple Music is growing. I can’t find any hard numbers right now but I think it’s safe to say that Apple has way more subscribers now than it did when More Life came out last year and definitely more than during Views. We’ll see what happens when Scorpion comes out though but I feel pretty confidently that even if Drake doesn’t take the record back, someone else will.

 

Well yeah someone will, likely Drake. But when it comes to big rappers, you only have to look at album sales to see that Cole is huge. Not as big as Drake, but as album artists they’re somewhat comparable.

Beauty and The Beat by Edan just missed out. Blueprint is a little inconsistant for me as some of the production isn't to my liking. Wanted to include Donuts, but I decided to leave it out because of the lack of actual rapping!

Still Brazy was a massive grower but once I got into it it dominated my life.

 

yeah Still Brazy wasn't as immediate as My Krazy Life but it was still really good.

Suu Woop has me excited for this new album.

 

You'll forgetting Red Friday. That was great too

 

Sad that Still Brazy never fully clicked for me. MKL is unbelievably good.

 

I'll have to give Red Friday another go because I don't think it really clicked with me.
