An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

JID is probably the closest to me. his production isn't always as good as Kanye's was but he's a better rapper for sure

I feel like this is exactly what you are looking for, it's almost uncanny valley how close to that era of Kanye it is honestly

I skimmed through that and it does not sound like the first three Kanye albums haha

  4. I like JID, not sure if it's quite what I'm looking for and yeah, the uncanny valley of IDK's voice and flow is sometimes too much lol but I will definitely keep them in mind. Excited to try Wiki again.

But Little Brother...woah. This is the ticket. I don't know how I hadn't heard of them, especially considering I was familiar with 9th Wonder. Just finished The Listening, going in release order. It's such a good feeling to have a discography to jump into. Thanks for the recs, everyone.

Oh man, you’re in for a treat.

I can also recommend this album, though Kanye was very involved in making it, so I’m not sure if that crosses a line for you:

    Also these two:

    And these:

    Game Theory

    Fan-Tas-Tic, Vol. 2

    Popular Demand

These don’t all fit the bill lyrically, but I guess they put me in similar moods at those early Kanye albums.

  6. Doesn't cross a line -- in fact, I can occasionally revisit those records or certain tracks because of what they meant to me, but I know that's uncommon around here (I don't blame anyone) and in all honesty it might happen like once a year, so I'm just looking for something to scratch those itches and introduce myself to great hip-hop that is new to me while minimizing how often I specifically return to his discography.

I appreciate all of the recommendations!

If you don't hear Kanye in "Red" at least, your ears need some checking

You’re welcome! Did you listen to any Common, especially the Kanye-produced albums?

Little Brother brings to mind De La Soul or Black Star moreso than Kanye IMO. The Listening is a fantastic album though. Haven’t really dug too deep into their discog so I should do that.

maybe it’s a little too obvious but another artist that scratches the Kanye itch is Lupe Fiasco. And he’s very clearly the better rapper of the two. Another might be Jidenna. Theophilus London is also one that comes to mind—though they all take a bit of a different direction.

Then you should also listen to Finding Forever asap. He has more great albums (some are classics, but almost all are at least good to great) but those too are probably closest to what you want.

See to me the first two Kanye albums somewhat fall into that same category for me.

Speaking of Black Star, @Aaron Mook you’d maybe also like Beautiful Struggle by Talib Kweli and Black On Both Sides by Mos Def (though that one is audibly from a few years earlier).

Also, this is a wild card, but if it is high pitched soul samples and goofy (in a good way) rhymes you miss, listen Come Home With Me by Cam’ron.

This is not about Hip Hop specifically, but there are a lot of references to it, and it’s a really great read in general.

I think it might be partly because I love The Alchemist but this album is finally clicking for me

I know this was posted in the r&b thread also but man Brent kills this one. It really does give 90’s & 2000’s r&b and hip hop vibes.

I liked Brent Faiyaz’s last one, but couldn’t listen to it much because there were moments that hit a little to close to home at the time. It was difficult to listen to anyway, but where I was at the time, it was not a good listen for me. Enough time has passed, so may give that and this new one a listen.

I remember being super hyped on Wasteland when it was coming out but I feel like only the singles and maybe like 1 or 2 more non singles I liked.

I just remember thinking it was super long and some of those skits felt awkward to listen to.

this new record feels all killer no filler. There’s only one skit and the run time is a perfect length.

I haven't really listened to much R&B in the last 20 years but liked a lot of stuff from the 90s and early 2000s and this definitely scratches that itch.
