Losing Datpiff would have been losing hundreds of hours of music forever, so glad they're not going anywhere. That site is genuinely a hip-hop institution at this point

There are people out there who have never heard any of the Dedication, Da Drought, or We Got It 4 Cheap tapes because they’re not streaming and they can’t bother to download mp3s, and that’s a bummer

  12. Is it a hot take to prefer Stillmatic over Blueprint?

my take is that The Lost Tapes is the real Stillmatic and his best album

I think Illmatic is objectively better as a whole, but I probably prefer listening to more of the songs on Stillmatic (if that makes sense)

The Lost Tapes is technically what was supposed to be I am… and Nastradamous.

That is what I meant as well. I would never argue Stillmatic is the better record, but I find Stillmatic much more enjoyable and replayable. It also came out during my high school years when I was most active in listening to music/buying albums.

I was 8 when Illmatic came out so never had the attachment to it as I did for his later records.

some of it is, not all. there are songs on it from pretty much every era, and a looot of stuff that leaked from the original I Am double album didn't make it on there and still hasn't been officially released

I also just think Lost Tapes works better as an album than most Nas albums

Like 50% of essential 00s rap will never be officially released. There really should be a stable archive for all that.

  23. Illmatic is definitely better, It Was Written might even be, but I listened to it back to back with The Blueprint and as much as I've been loving some of those classic Jay albums, I think I prefer his voice and his flow. Even the production tbh.

Still, it's fuck Nas for what he did to Kelis

I definitely strongly prefer The Blueprint to Stillmatic but I also haven’t listened to Stillmatic nearly as much and haven’t listened to either one in like ten years. maybe I should re-visit

I pretty much only listen to modern hip hop these days, and very selectively at that
