yup yup, everyone else involved with it got full time jobs. it was a great learning experience though, wouldn't have been able to do everything I with have this app if I hadn't worked on Owt, so it still feels like progress.

aka International Workers Day, chosen in remembrance of the haymarket affair, celebrating the victories like 8 hours work day, weekends, improved working conditions, etc that workers fought and won

 

There's also a parade.

 

I'd be surprised if you knew what it was, they don't really teach this stuff in school

May Day was originally a holiday that the socialist and communist parties in the late 1800s created to commemorate the haymarket affair. there have been various attempts to get Labor Day moved to May 1, but it never caught on, especially not after the cold war and red scare here in the US.

Not so fun fact: officially in the US, May 1 is "Loyalty Day" as a sort of weak ass retaliation to May Day

 

Loyalty Day sounds like something out of like Gilead

 

late 19th/early 20th century American history is my favorite period of American history, mostly due to the various workers protests
