Okay peeps my first thought:

WHAT THE FUCK

 

Good, good

 

So, that was one of the prettiest movies I have ever seen, holy cinematography. Just wow. And the score...perfectly designed to make you uncomfortable, tense, scared. Loved it. Few movies these days make me audibly say "OH SHIT" and i think i said it 10 times tonight. Ann Dowd is a "hey it's that lady" for me, but not anymore.

One thing that made me sad was when Charlie was walking outside without her shoes and Annie says to her something like "are you an idiot?" and right there you can see her reflecting back what she got from her own mother. Also I get why her own brother killed himself, but I'm curious about the father starving himself to death. I assume that is of some significance but I can't quite put it together.

 

Both of Annie's parents suffered their own forms of mental illness.

We're supposed to think these were passed down to Annie and potentially to Peter.

 

This movie is insane! It's a week later and I've been thinking about and discussing this movie almost non-stop... yet someone can come in and mention the grandfather starving himself and I realize that there's an entire piece I missed so now I gotta obsess over this piece of information for a while.

 

It’s interesting to note how much Annie cared more about Charlie than Peter. Like take the scene when Peter asks to borrow the car, she never once looks at him during the conversation. When Charlie, who’s a teenager too, is outside with the bird head, Annie is upset that she was even outside, let alone walking in her socks outside. Annie is established to having a bias at that point forward and it’s interesting to watch her relationship with Peter practically disintegrate in front of our eyes as she desperately tries to establish contact with Charlie while Peter drowns in his own grief and has little comfort from his mother trying to deal with it. It’s something I noticed doesn’t get touched on a lot in think pieces for this and that’s a shame because it’s a truly compelling part of the film in my opinion.

 

but did they? what Annie could have thought was DID could have been possession. and her brother wasn't schizophrenic, because his mother WAS trying to put something in him

 

It's one of the most clear themes in this film. The title even hints at it.

 

To add to this, there’s also the gaslighting she does to Peter, most notably in the scene when she tries to choke him from under the bed. There’s also the miniature scene of the accident, which shows how little she actually cares about Peter’s feelings while she recreates the moment while disregarding Steve’s protests of her even making it. Also the séance scene, when she literally goes through the ritual and allows Charlie to posses her but at the same time, she won’t make the effort to preserving her own relationship with her son. Now, this might’ve been due ultimately to her grieving but it’s something to think about.

we only know that they are mentally ill from what Annie says. she thought her brother was schizophrenic and specifically mentions that he killed himself because he claimed their mom was trying to put things in him. if you didn't know your mom was queen worshiper of a king of hell, wouldn't you just think your brother was crazy? of course you would

 

that accident recreation was so fucked up

 

I've thought about this scene a lot.

Initially, I thought someone was trying to choke him/pull him under the bed, but then Peter claimed someone was trying to pull his head off...which makes a lot more sense given what we know about the headless body count in this.

It was probably a sleepwalking Annie under his bed, but we never really know.

 

Am I misremembering that scene or something? I thought Peter was just having a nightmare and Annie woke him up from it, but the whole "almost setting Peter on fire" thing led Peter to accuse Annie of trying to pull his head off.

 

She also made a headless miniature of Peter with no head that’s shown prior to that, a little foreshadowing to what her true intentions were.

 

This happened after that, the scene with her confessing to him that she tried to miscarry him and then he caught on fire was a dream. Her trying to kill him was real.

 

I think they're saying that they took it as (and I did as well) Peter using that real memory of her trying to light them on fire as reasoning to why he thought she was trying to choke him. I too thought it was a dream that she woke him up from but I could have misinterpreted it.

 

It's a neutral representation of the accident.

Also on my second viewing I noticed a shot that showed the miniature head was missing, before shit hits the fan.

can i just say that i did NOT expect the scene with gabriel byrne (from the trailer) to actually be real and not a dream...one of my audible "oh shit" moments last night

 

This is one of the main reason i'm glad i didn't see a full trailer before seeing this movie. That moment was insane.

 

Totally agreed. I didn’t take it to be much of a spoiler because I assumed it was a hallucination, but then when that scene started I realized we were in for a bad time.

 

I didn’t see any of the trailers - what scene are you talking about?

 

When Gabriel Byrne lived up to his name.

 

Ok so that scene I was like "oh wow this is gonna happen alright" when it was leading up but they actually twisted it a little but not making him be the one to throw it in, but her. So even though the trailer kind of spoiled that for me it didnt play out exactly as I thought which is cool.

 

That’s also a possibility too
