Stumbled upon some books my older brother had when he was in elementary school. Found an almost perfect copy of Prisoner of Azkaban that belonged to him that says it’s an American first print from October 1999 on the inside slip.

The inside slip also says the book was $19.99. I checked my local B&N and they sell the hardcover book for $29.99. $10 inflation is real.

 

Looks better than I thought it would. Still waiting to see video to see if it runs well.

 

What are some memories you fellows have of book releases?

I remember when Goblet of Fire was released and there were hundreds of kids sitting down reading it. This was around 10 - 11 pm. Only thing I thought of was “nerds”

 

I went to a midnight launch for Deathly Hallows. Showed up to my local Chapters (Canadian book store chain at the time) and saw like 500 people in line. Worker at the door told me they didn’t have enough copies for everyone in line so don’t waste my time. Left feeling pretty dejected cause I was terrified of not getting the book on launch day for fear of spoilers. On my way home I passed by a Zellers just after midnight. Had no idea they were doing a launch because they didn’t promote it at all. Walked in the door, not a soul in sight, grabbed the book and the cashier told me the first book of the night was free and got a $50 Zellers gift card lol

 

I worked a midnight release for Deathly Hallows. That was such a cool experience. I remember me and a few coworkers were riding brooms around the store pretending to “fly” and shit

How is the author of the book being an exec producer not great?

Exec producers also don’t have much say compared to producers, but this is her creation. She should have a little to say about the show.

 

It’s not great because she’s a piece of shit

 

This just means she MAYBE gets to have creative input which isn’t bad because she knows the world better than anyone else. Especially with this being a series it means the story will include more of what she wrote in the books than the films even included. From a creative decision it makes sense to have her exec producer just to check for consistency of her work.

More than likely though this is a Steven Spielberg “exec produce” Jurassic world thing. She’ll be credited by name with inklings of creative mentioning but not much past that.

I highly doubt she won’t be hands on considering how much control she had over the movies. So fuck her and fuck this

 

From a creative standpoint that wants the show to be good and faithful to the source material it’s a wise decision to have the person that wrote the books to have creative input, even if it’s just something like checking for in-world consistencies so the show doesn’t end up an incoherent mess.

I understand why people wouldn’t want to watch the show, but it’s being made regardless so WB should try to make it the best they know having Rowling as an exec producer will help (creatively).

Why do they need her for that when they have 7 books they can reference?

Besides her being a shitty person, I don’t really care for her input that much when she just makes up and changes shit after the fact. Just base the show on the words that are written and not the writer who now says Harry and Hermione should’ve ended up together. I don’t think she even knows her own world anymore. Also if the Fantastic Beasts movies and Cursed Child were made with her creative input, then I pass even harder on her touching this series ever again.

 

This. Deathly Hallows 1 and 2 were the only two movies she even had producer credit on, yet she had control enough to make decisions like “only British actors for British roles” from the beginning, so I can only imagine she’ll have more input as an “active executive producer.” Let alone the fact that she’ll be paid more with that title that she otherwise would.

 

Yeah the creative decisions she made after the books were done have not been good and I didn’t bother watching the fantastic beasts stuff, but like I said earlier I don’t see her making any decisions more than something like in-world consistency which is what alot of authors do with shows/movies based on their works.

I would argue that she clearly does not know the books more than anyone. If she did, she would not act the way she does.

 

People are literally obsessed with this world and know every little thing. They could easily find someone with just as much, or more, “knowledge” than her to check for “inconsistencies” while filming lol

This series is never going away in popular culture and the LEAST HBO could do is distance themselves from the extremely problematic creator when there is no actual need for her.
