Is this the least essential greatest hits collection ever, or just top five?

what do you consider essential vs not for greatest hits albums?

Usually, "not having one already that has 10 of the same songs" is a pretty key criteria.

This would at least be more interesting if it was a best of with a curated favorites list from the band, or if the order wasn't just chronological. As is, it feels incredibly pointless.

Oof, anything re-recorded is bad. I feel like another band did that recently. Maybe Bowling for Soup?

Re-recording is good IF the band has stayed good AND they do new versions of the songs. See: The Early November Fifteen Years, Kevin Devine Matter of Time, but those aren't quite greatest hits anyway but you get the idea

It's not uncommon at all for Greatest Hits comps to have some of the same songs, and their first one doesn't include anything from American Idiot, which is by far their biggest album with their biggest singles to at least a couple generations of kids. It's also really smart timing coming off a very successful world tour (or maybe in the midst of it, I'm not sure) and an album that has made them more relevant than they've been in nearly a decade (or at least since 21st Century Breakdown).

A band that has been around for less than 30 years does not need two greatest hits albums, full stop. Especially in the era of streaming, where everyone just finds and plays the hits anyway. If you're going to release a second greatest hits collection, do what U2 did with their first two and catalog a different period of time, instead of just repackaging the same songs you already put on a compilation.

I gotta disagree with Craig here. Greatest Hits collections are specifically NOT for fans like you, or I, or many other fans of the band that would find this annoying.

This is specifically for people who want to dip their toes into the Green Day world, maybe based on one single they know, or just knowing the band's name. Having the ONLY Greatest Hits album out there contain zero American Idiot songs, and zero RevRadio songs is just poor marketing, for many many reasons.

It's not about "needing" two greatest hits album, it's about creating a new sku at minimal cost to acquire more fans, it's a tired and true plan that works and Green Day are a smart band with a smart marketing team behind them

  17. Streaming is a thing for "new" fans ... this is to sell vinyl bundles to die hard fans. Pretty simple as that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I get that's it for new fans but I mean, streaming is a way better and more viable option for new fans. I can't see anybody buying this as an introduction to the band and nobody already familiar needs this. I'd consider myself a die hard fan but I'm not buying these songs again when I can just continue to support the band and stream a new song. Seems like nobody needs this.

Also it's weird to me imagining kids not knowing who green day is but then again I'm entering my mid twenties in a few years and I feel 12 still so. Weird.

Oof Green Day will always be a favourite band of mine but look at the nosedive this tracklisting takes after the AI songs holy moly. I'll ride for Still Breathing but aside from that boy oh boy wowee.

Also International Superhits is the best 'greatest hits' album of ALL TIME.

By that logic, you should release a new greatest hits album after every record you do, to update with your new hits.

I'd argue that something like this would have made sense 15 or 20 years ago, but not now when anyone can pull up Spotify and dip their toes into the Green Day world by playing the most played tracks.

Getting a new song is all that matters to me since this collection isn't geared towards longtime fans like myself anyway

Whether you like it or not, people still buy physical product. WAY less than before, but still enough that it's a worthwhile endeavor for large bands. And no, it's not logical to do a new release every year.

Bottom line, the band will make money doing this, that's all that really needs to be said

    A) you can be a casual fan of a band, but still want a vinyl release that encompasses their big songs. I'd love a greatest hits NIN record, because there are plenty of their songs I like, but I will never be into them enough to buy every one of their albums on vinyl I like. Also, a greatest hits can be a great placeholder vinyl for bands with huge discographies.

Frankly I'm considering this because the only vinyl I have of GD is Rev Radio, so it'd be nice to have all the big songs collected in one place. Eventually I'd like to own them all, but considering how many bands I feel that way for plus new music, it may literally be 10 years before I get around to it.

Also when Green Day released their first greatest hits album, vinyl was not in, and this is primarily aimed at vinyl collectors.

I actually think this band could pull of a re-recorded greatest hits album. Would love to hear a studio version of 2000 Light Years Away with the tools available to them now, and Billie has actually become a better singer than he was in the 90's and early 00's so that could be interesting too

Nevertheless I'm super excited for the new song, sounds like it might be political

Made a playlist of some of my favourite Green Day tracks from all of their releases, going in reverse order. If anybody wants to check it out here's the link

Hopefully this posts right, I'm on mobile and don't really know how to share Spotify in general haha. Made this because I've been revisiting their latest album/discography and I've had my love of this band thoroughly cemented.
