Jack White tried headlining Barlcays back in April and the turnout was so bad that they had to curtain off the entire top level.

Every other act you listed draws well, but they're also all legacy acts who haven't had a mainstream hit in like 15 years. Tame Impala are a fairly modern band with huge mainstream success. I feel like I'm being trolled lol

I swear I'm not trying to be a jerk with this question and I'm honestly curious, but what defines "huge mainstream success" when it comes to Tame Impala?

At a glance, it doesn't look like they have huge album sales or charting success with singles, so it's clearly not something measured by traditional standards. Is it just a touring thing? Like they're known for being a good live act?

What would, in their example, lead to the feeling that a vast majority of the population would know who they are?

20 million monthly listeners, only on Spotify, is pretty notable

Compelling. I find this interesting. I guess if anything it's a clear sign that the traditional ways of defining success are no longer applicable. Honestly, I feel like I probably would never have heard about Tame Impala myself if I didn't frequent music sites, but clearly people gravitate to them from somewhere.

Pretty much everyone I know likes tame Impala to some extent, even people who listen to like no rock or anything. Which I think is a big part of it - they kind of escape genre and fit in anywhere. And they’re really huge on the festival circuit. Co-signed by a lot of huge artists too, Rihanna in particular coming to mind.

20 million monthly Spotify listeners, two number 1 albums, two platinum albums, seven songs that have been in the US Rock Top 10 chart, a song with Lady Gaga, a song covered by Rihanna on her last album, one of their songs has over 1 billion Spotify streams, headlined most major music festivals and tour arenas around the entire world.

This is where it's losing me a little, and I realize I'm unfairly looking at this solely from an American perspective, but I'm guessing the platinum part is in another country? Cause they didn't hit platinum here.

I'm also not entirely clear on what the Rock Top 10 chart is in relation to radio. I actually do weekly radio surveys, so I know they have had songs on Alternative before, but not the songs I see listed on Wikipedia.

I guess I'm wondering if this is a case where their fame primarily came from other countries and it's bled over here through their touring?

Oh wait, I take something back. I missed that Currents did go platinum. I didn't see that before. My bad.

Maybe I'm just out of touch then. If you asked me prior to today, I would've said they're critically acclaimed and big in their scene, but I wouldn't have thought them on a level like they're currently being discussed.

And no offense meant by this, but I feel like sometimes people tend to view this scene in a vacuum and make bands in it more important or popular than they actually are.

So I wondered if that was it. And now I know a little bit more than I did before. Carry on then.

Rihanna’s co-sign awhile back is what I think helped them become super popular.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

as the token australian i can confirm tame impala are absolutely massive here. like ubiquitous to the point where everyone i know is getting a bit tired of hearing them lol

anyways, both these new songs are good but nothing's grabbed me like the best of song machine yet. maybe they'll grow on me before the end of this looooong ass rollout

I guarantee there will be people listening to the Tame Impala and Bad Bunny tracks that have never heard Gorillaz before just to hear those artists

Two of the biggest artists of the current generation
