  1. According to this, he wanted to work on smaller projects. I haven't seen any news about anything he might be working on, though.

I can't say as I blame him - his experience on Rogue One must have been very challenging and stressful to say the least, and he has always been extremely respectful when talking about it. I hope some of his smaller projects come to fruition soon.

I mean, people going for the fights aren’t going to be that disappointed. They are big dumb monsters wrestling each other. My big problem is the goddamn camerawork. It’s like shaky Bourne-style camera mixed with the choppy, non-stop cuts of a Michael Bay film. And there’s no explanation for why it’s that way.

The biggest problem is this script is pure dogshit. I felt bad for Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga in some of their scenes because they’re so poorly written. And Bradley Whitford is nothing but dad jokes the entire time. The first one had its problems with Sgt. Kick-Ass, but this spreads that dull character work on every person in this and they’re all of a much higher caliber than Mr. Quicksilver.

This is the single most distressing thing I have read about this film HANDS DOWN. Almost all of the time, I hate shaky cam, and I LOATHE that type of editing.

I think that was part of my frustration with Godzilla '14 - part of my brain knows that what Edwards was ultimately doing was admirable and creative but the other part of my brain knows that if he did film a knock down drag out balls to the wall monster throwdown it would look GLORIOUS and be stunningly framed and photographed with amazing compositions and you would actually be able to see and follow what the fuck is happening unlike 90% of the shit Hollwyood dumps out.

Y'all complaining about menial human stories in a Godzilla movie like that shit didn't exist in the old films. That's like 70% of those movies.

It can be a valid personal criticism for someone who goes to those films expecting it but I don’t see how someone can watch a Godzilla film with an understanding of the franchise and give it 1/5 stars for menial human stories. It’s grading the film on something that the franchise was never about. As long as there is still narrative, I couldn’t care less about how weak the human characters are.

Cinematography is a valid criticism because it’s how the film is presented to the audience.

Godzilla is definitely about humans and their stories.

The humans are there to fill in the gaps, I agree. Other than the first film, Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla vs Destoryah, Godzilla ‘98, and ‘14, I can’t think of any other films where the humans matter and I can’t think of any where the human stories are actually good minus the love triangle in the original. Broderick’s and Cranston’s characters are okay and worth watching but the films don’t depend on them. That’s 6 films out of 35.

Regardless of the source of criticism, I just saw a TV trailer for this set to LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" and that worries me.

I feel like I remember liking the human characters in the OG King Kong vs. Godzilla, but I was also a child that watched that movie over and over again and when I think about it now they were pretty much only there for exposition lol

Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla was super heavy on the human stuff. I can't remember a ton of the older films' beats, but I watched that one about 100 times growing up. lol

Right. But when the movie stretches to 2+ hours because the human subplot is taking up so much time, maybe the writers or director don't have a grasp on the franchise. Like, there's a way to easily streamline the story that can knock out a solid half hour of the movie and still focus on the Titans and the big fights. This does not choose to go that way, but rather hang it on this self-serious and typical dramatic plot.

I still think it hits the big moments with Godzilla well, but I think the human stuff is worse than the 2014 plot with Kick-Ass.

The human stuff should be quick and painless, and you shouldn't feel like it is taking away from what we all actually want to see.

Or you have to be good enough to make Jaws or Alien, which is a really tall order.

I actually thought the human stuff in 2014 was some of the best (not in terms of quality but entertainment) in the franchise. 2014 also felt very fresh to me and I enjoyed the build up to Godzilla so that could be why I enjoyed the human side of the story.

I agree that stretching a film out for a dramatic and serious human subplot should be avoided unless it’s great in its own light but Dougherty unfortunately seems to be all about human characters that only sound cool on paper. I would be okay with an hour and a half film that doesn’t have a lot of human subplot nonsense.

That trailer shows sooooo much too. I honestly love all the IG ads with the Godzilla suit going to the beach and riding in a low rider with Ice Cube Jr.
