Have you looked into financial assistance? We were able to get ours lowered by 80% (allowing us to pay it off) due to income thresholds.

When I was a public educator, our small rural MO district was part of a consortium. To get lower prices, rural districts would "band together" to get a better rate across all districts.

However in MO back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, districts did not always pay into medicare. As such, those teacher retirees who paid less/not at all into medicare do not qualify. At our small districts then, we have to offer retirees the opportunity to pay and stay on our insurance. This created a situation where we had more retirees than FTE on the plan. Retirees that were not on medicare, and subsequently were maxing out healthcare claims.

To combat this, our consortium dissolved, and no one wanted to absorb our district into their consortium. So I worked with my superintendent to identify the least terrible insurance offering.

I went from paying $450/month for myself & kids to paying $950/month for our workplace plan. This was the least terrible option.

The district went from paying $350 per employee to $775 or thereabouts. It was insane.

I was making $33K/yr when I left that job.

    Now?

I WFH, make $80K/yr, and my employer pays 100% of the premiums for myself, my kids, and my spouse. Plus the plan has a free telemed option.

It's wild. Even if I wanted to look for another job, I am terrified at losing such a sweet health insurance gig, which is fucked up.

I think our insurance (the best option out of hte 4 we're given to choose from anyway) costs like $1300 a month or something like that. The state pays the bulk of it (like roughyl 1100) and then our district pays for the rest as part of the contract. It's about the best possible insurance you could get tbh.

my wife was at the OB and she asked a question and was told that if they talked about anything other than the pap smear then it was no longer preventative and she'd have to bill it as an additional appointment and my wife would have to pay an additional copay
