I talked to a bunch of people at work about this and honestly almost everyone was enjoying the hell out of this story - even the people who were not gleefully celebrating it were saying stuff like 'eh, he kinda deserved it though'

But I also witnessed a mass shooting and it really traumatized me. That could have fucked up witnesses.

 

I’m not a big proponent of individual terrorism as a political act, and for all I know Thompson was killed over some sort of personal vendetta having nothing to do with the horrific practices of his company. BUT as much pain, death and suffering as the insurance industry causes around the country, I feel that - at minimum - people are well within their rights to make jokes, and - at best - this restores something of a natural order about what people who make the planet legitimately worse for profit might expect.

 

I admitted that I am an asshole for laughing at the person who runs off with their coffee at first and on reflection I genuinely feel bad for that person and think there is something wrong with me for that being my first reaction

ultimately though I would say it is unfortunate that it had to happen near innocent bystanders but the shooting is completely justified

the one that always stuck out to me as particularly horrible was that a childhood friend of my wife's had a son with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and insurance would only pay for a basic wheelchair like the kind that the hospital wheels you out in just to cover their ass and not any of the specialized wheelchairs that allowed him to do more because none of the specialized ones were strictly necessary for life according to insurance

Doesn't the person being pardoned have to admit guilt for the crime? So I don't get how a blanket pardon of unknown crimes works

I think if you're applying for a pardon, then yes. But if the president is just using their discretion to grant them then they can do pretty much whatever the fuck they want.
