My grandpa was for sure racist in many ways, but still voted for Obama over McCain and Romney because he was also a UAW member and recognized the Republicans as being anti-Union, and didn’t associate Obama with NAFTA. He definitely voted for Trump over Hilary because of NAFTA. His Union (which was largely non-white at the shop he worked out of) bought him into solidarity with people who were not like him, and wound up with them fighting together against a common class enemy (the boss). That’s the way you do it. Not by saying “well let’s become more racist/transphobic/xenophobic ourselves.”
