I remember creating a new YT account a few years ago and by the end of the day my recommendations were basically Joe Rohan type shit. And I was just watching NBA highlights and movie reviews. It was pretty disturbing how quick it happened.

RE: algorithms and gen z men. I don’t know how you stop it. The Zuckerbergs of the world aren’t going to change their algorithms for social good.

Left wing groups need to study the propaganda pipeline the right has put in place. Start not just churning out content on these platforms, but also actively promoting it. It’s not going to get picked up if it’s just passing between leftist social groups. As much as the idea of spending ad dollars on places like Twitter or YouTube or TikTok might feel, you gotta start chopping this content in to easily digested ad clips and targeting younger men who are watching conservative coded content to get it in front of them, do sponsored posts with influencers, etc. Otherwise, this stuff is really just going to get killed by the algorithm.

Oh and put some ad dollars on Google search too to get that top spot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people click the top ad spot on their search thinking it was the first organic listing. Target the insane policy and buzzword words the right tries to promote outrage on and get your counter message out there when people are searching for it.

 

I wonder if state govts could legislate algos? Like why do I need a “for you” tab at all? Or whatever they all call it?

I fear that all of our brains have been irrevocably broken by our devices and there's no going back. AI is just making everyone dumber. I keep seeing ads advertising how you can have AI summarize things for you so you never have to read anything. Why is that a good thing?

A legislative solution is the ideal one in the long haul. I worry that any legislation on it might just be a social media version of the equal time rule, which has always just been a way to normalize the views of nut jobs like Trump. I also think it would be very hard to enforce, because so much of this type of content is sort of hidden. Like a video game streamer can claim their content isn’t aimed at being political, so how do you filter that out?

I think legislation needs to be targeted at misinformation specifically. If you’re creating content claiming something as obviously false as the Springfield pet story, you should face penalties. Part of that penalty should be to inform anyone who saw it that it was false, like the misinformation version of a product recall. And there needs to be enforcement against the platforms themselves too. Punish the content creator first, but then if a place like Facebook doesn’t counter misinformation in a reasonable time frame, they also face a fine. This would build an incentive for them to better moderate their own platforms.
