My girlfriend and I have been complaining about this recently and figured we were just getting old.

 

Interesting. I haven't noticed it in Coke at all---but that could be because I went quite a while where I wasn't really drinking soda at all unless it was in a captain and coke or other mixed drink. So maybe I missed a flavor shift. Unless he's literally talking about the shift from sugar to corn syrup in the 80s, in which case then yeah it's always tasted the same to me because i've always only known that one hah.

I don't remember noticing a huge difference in the ice cream, but that lowering of dairy fat is probably why my semi-lactose intolerant self can eat their ice cream without too many effects. Which I'm happy about because the lactose free ice cream i've had kinda sucks/has weird texture.

The only foods I can really think of something like this happening is Celeste pizza, and specifically celeste Zesty 4 cheese pizza. There was definitely a recipe shift at some point because the change in taste on that was so dramatic. It's still good for frozen pizza but not nearly as good as it used to be,

The Ritz cracker example is one that I noticed a while back, had not bought some in a long time but had made a dip for a family party that thought they would be good with. Damn things turned into dust with the lightest of dips, ended up eating my GF's glute free crackers instead.

 

Also, is there a chocolate snackfood more dependent on being fresh than Reese's Cups? They're my favorite candy/chocolate by far, but you really need to get them at convenience stores and gas stations where they sell fast. Every time I get them from a grocery store or out of a big bag of individually wrapped ones that is older, the taste is off, it's harder, etc. But the fresh ones are so delicious.

My favorite thing to do is to leave them in a warm area for a little while to the point where they jusssst start to melt, or are nice and soft. So good.

 

Keebler cookies taste more artificial and I feel like there are other brands too, girl scout cookies also taste worse

 

This thread just reminded me of that one episode of Billions where a billionaire uses his hedge fund to buy out his favorite childhood snack company because he think they suck now and he wants bring back the original recipe.

 

If you're not putting your reese's cups in the fridge, you're doing it wrong.

Does anyone remember Penguins? They were this triple chocolate bar type thing, I think they were from Australia or UK or something...goddamn they were good.

We almost need another '-flation' word for this. Like it's not shrinkflation which also sucks, but quality-flation. Shit-flation. The changing of ingredients/components (almost surely done to cut corners and save money) that result in a worse overall product.

 

Could just use the term "enshittification" and apply it beyond the web

I actually do the opposite. I eat the outside edges first, and then eat the center by itself. Not sure how when or why I started doing that.

I also hate pretty much all their variations they've tried to unleash on us in recent years, but the chocolate lovers one is pretty good. As is the big cup of course

 

The chocolate in Reese's cups is so terrible you have to freeze them to mute the flavor or else they're barely even edible.

 

The article uses "skimpflation" because they're skimping on the quality and/or amount of the ingredients used.

 

Maybe if the Democratic Party leadership put their Reeses in the freezer, he’d be into it.

 

Why would anyone eat Reece's when the mini dark chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joes exist?

 

If the Dems are eating frozen reeses and the Repubs are threatening to kill anyone who eats Reese's...I'm gonna have to go with the Dems.
