Israel just speedrunning through all of the worst mistakes the US made after enduring a horrible terrorist attack at this point

 

Some of the photos/videos out there certainly feel like they should be Abu Ghraib levels of scandal

I have been a "lesser of two evils guy" since 2016. For the first time I have absolutely no problem leaving the presidential column blank when I vote in 2024. Yeah sorry no rationalization at this point can bring myself to vote for someone enabling ethnic cleansing.

I will still vote for like mayor and congress or whatever, but just not president.

Problem is when you extend that graph you see the 50th percentile get back up into the "Gains" section of the chart after another few months. So really in the last 3 years there was a roughly 6 month spot where the 50th percentile real wages were shrinking. Otherwise, they've been rising, just not as fast as the people poorer than them.

The real fun thing to think about is that giant spike in 2020/early 2021 was due to government spending that everyone is now blaming for inflation and, thus, real wages decreasing lol.

 

I mean, you could certainly make the case that US colonialism is why groups like Al Qaeda exist in the first place, but the end of the day it was still a terrorist attack aimed at civilians and not any military or govt apparatus. Combine that with the attackers basically saying yeah we wanted to kill as many people as possible and just want perpetual war forever, you won't get much sympathy for them lol. Makes it even harder for people to grasp how awful what Israel is doing in retaliation too.

Like I don't know how anyone over 30 is seeing those stories and pictures of the prisoners and not immediately reliving all the things we did in Afghanistan/Iraq that have generally been accepted universally as awful things. Only thing I can think is they're too lazy to think past step of 1 of "there was a terrible terrorist attack, so bombs away", like they've completely forgotten that type of thinking is what led to all those things they later agreed were bad and we shouldn't have done them lol

 

This random aside, but my all time favorite "thinking they're owning me, but really owning themselves" dumb guy trope is any discourse around the confederacy they'll say "well did you know that the Confederates and KKK were actually Democrats!"

Yes, Southern conservative small government proto-libertarian democrats. Whose descendants all became Republicans in the late 20th century when liberal wing of their party supported and passed desegregation. The paradigm of the GOP as the conservative party and the Dems as the liberal party did not exist in the 1860's . Thank you for tossing out a basic American history 101 factoid without understanding any of the actual context.

 

It's not explicitly part of our curriculum and 95% of them will never remember it, but when I teach political parties and liberal/conservative, I always make sure I talk about how the Dems used to be the conservative party and the Republicans were the liberal party when they started. It won't stick with most of them but hopefully a few of them are able to make that connection over the years instead of falling for that dumbass argument.

I love that the three heroes of the Union were a depressed man, a perpetuallly drunk guy, and a guy who had nervous breakdown in the middle of the war.

Grant also should be one of the greatest inspirational stories of all time. In 1859 he was a drunk broke loser who worked the counter of his dad's leather goods store, a decade later he was the general who saved the country and president.

 

Snacks suck now. Everything we buy for our kids' lunches falls apart the second you unwrap it (Looking at you, Chewy granola bars). I thought the above was insightful, and isn't something I considered before.
