One of my problems with the congestion tax is that roughly 1/3 of commuters going into lower Manhattan are from New Jersey, but 100% of the revenue generated by the tax is going to the MTA. NJ Transit likely does not have the capacity to properly handle the increase if all these people decided to take public transit to work instead of driving into the city (as this person suggests they simply do). Would be nice if some funding from the tax goes to neighboring transit agencies being impacted as well. Obviously New York will say that isn’t fair since it’s their tax, but this is really going to hurt the pockets of a lot of out of state commuters who see none of the benefits from it

also curious how the congestion tax impacts persons like delivery trucks, repair person, Uber, etc. that have no choice but to drive into the city and can’t take public transit. Haven’t read much into that if that’s being considered.

 

TBH my biggest thought is "increasing people on local trains during a covid surge" seems like a bad idea lol

It does seem like a no-brainer to share some of the revenue with NJ transit to improve those commuter services. There are lawsuits ongoing, so I do wonder if that'll end up happening..
