My school has a STEM class where they are bussed to another school with other kids in the district for the day once per week and do activities there. I excuse them from all my work for the day. Their previous teachers recommend them since it starts in my grade and it’s based on standardized test scores too. It’s seems pretty cool. They all love it.

 

I got literally every single question on the gifted test right so I had to go to a special school. I probably have ADHD but I haven’t been diagnosed with anything

 

Same here. Amazing grades all through high school and most of college. Adulthood has sucked.

I was literally diagnosed with combined type ADHD last month.

No but for real i don’t think gifted programs should exist. I think they’re often bad for students who go into them and they’re often bad for students who are in normal classes as well.

On a related note, a very close friend of mine went to a prep school where kids were recruited out of poorer school districts based on test scores and would graduate early, going to college at like 15 or 16 years old. He graduated with 27 students and has told me that 5 of them have committed suicide. He’s convinced - and I agree - that isolating yourself from the vast majority of your peers, taking on all this additional pressure of being “gifted” at an age before you really even know yourself, and starting college early were all super alienating experiences that likely contributed to mental health crises.

A lot of our best/brightest students we get come out of the gifted and IB programs at the middle and elementary levels. I usually get a bunch of them in 9th and then a bunch in 12th

 

I was in the a combined 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade GATE class in 3rd grade. I just remember we got all the different types of computers and we played a lot of Sim City and TI Invaders.
