They're worried about China having access to data on our entire population/secondary concern about how algos could be used to create political strife and etc.

The easy solution seems to be to force a sale to an American company, but apparently the parent company in China doesn't want to do that.

This is great news. I've only been listening to dolphin sex sounds because I thought it was hot.

Are you actually naive enough to believe that bullshit?

It has nothing to do with protecting our data and everything to do with protecting rich American tech companies. They are just upset that, after years of social media being dominated by American companies, a non American company is one of the most popular ones which means less money and users for the American ones

    achin' to be Prestigious

for months in Durango, CO , we've been pressuring city council to consider a ceasefire resolution, and last night they responded by passing a policy prohibiting us from bringing up matters on "international political controversy."

in defense of the policy, one city council member basically said, "i'm too busy raising a family and running multiple businesses. i don't have time to educate myself on what's going on around the world."

nice to continually be disillusioned by all levels of government. at least there's consistency.

i definitely think people in Congress are way more paranoid about China than they give a shit about Meta haha. They aren’t huge Zuckerberg fans there.

Is it because the parent company is linked to the Chinese government or something? It just seems very odd to ban a company because of where it was founded/would lead to bad retaliatory repercussions?

I think that’s what they’re saying. I honestly think they’re just being overparanoid about China because I honestly don’t know what use the data would be, and I also think they see this as a way to censor “misinformation” they will say is coming from/being driven by the CCP which is I think a questionable claim at best hah

I'd love someone to recut this but change every mention of AI to "blockchain" so we can see how little substance there is to what these folks are saying.

there's been a few instances on the front range of people coming to speak at meetings for a cease-fire as well. Hasn't happened at our council meeting yet, but it's not unusual that a city has a policy that states that public comment can only be on matters that the city council has the authority to address (e.g. they won't accept comment on the school district for example since they're a separate gov't entity), but making it that specific is ridiculous. I'd rather be in a meeting until 1am listening to people speak on the cease-fire than the usual comments about speeding in their neighborhood or how they're scared of the unhoused
