The fact that crash safety standards in this country don't even consider pedestrians is insane.

But the popularity of larger vehicles started in the mid-90s. The correlation here seems to be more with smartphone adoption and use than vehicle size, though vehicle size definitely doesn't help.

It really makes me feel like a liberal weenie, but some women turns up to work a few times a week in an absolute behemoth of a car, so big that she makes her own spot in the parking lot just parked next to the curb, and all I can think of is why on earth do you drive that? Unless you have multiple kids, I have no idea why you would want a car that big. Even as a family car, they are absurdly stupid and just to put it bluntly, a menace (for multiple reasons - environmental, safety, logistics and infrastructure incompatibilities etc).

Like that Yukon is just dumb. And this dweeb....

Responses like this are the bane of why politics in America suck. MY FREEDOM. MY FAMILYS FREEDROM. MY FAMILIES SAFETY. MY PARENTAL RIGHTS etc. ME ME ME ME ME ME ME. Don't ask me not to drive a tank because of a hypothetical . Don't ask me to weigh the pros and cons, pros to me are all that matters.

American conservatism that boils down to protecting individual rights (often for no reason other than just because), and not doing anything to better society is baffling to me. It truly feels like a uniquely American outlook and attitude most times.

And I'm sure if a conservative stumbled upon this they'd say 'YEA! OF COURSE! ThAT's WhAT MaKEs AmERICa GReaT'.

    Interesting, thanks for sharing!

I do wonder what accounts for the decrease in the first ~15 years of SUV/larger vehicle adoption though.

Probably something to be said too about how the general walkability of most places in the US has deteriorated over time as more and more priority is given to space for cars

Short car kings and queens unite. I’ve got a 2013 sedan that runs like a tank and gets 35 mpg highway. I’ll never drive a Yukon/Expedition. It doesn’t make sense with only two kids. If you need that much room, you overcalculated your life. Get a minivan.
