That may be true for eggs, which are an outlier along with poultry because of the bird flu outbreak, but it's not true for most things. And this is why pointing out those things is bad and wrong, because they're often presented incorrectly and without the full context.

Like that tweet about the lettuce that says "actually it's decreased 4.5%" completely ignores that it went up 25% before that. So again, a head of lettuce that cost $1 in 2021 now costs $1.19. Is that less than the $1.25 it cost in 2022? Sure, but it's still way the fuck more expensive than it was, and that's what people notice.

And your point about rent inflation lagging behind wage increases in one specific measurement ignore that for 40 years rents went up nearly 9% per year while wages increased 17.5% total! And then rent went up another 18% in 2021. Rent went up more in 1 year than wages did in 40 years!!! That shit is absolutely insane.

Is it fair that all of this is coming down on Biden and the democrats now, while people did little about it over the past 40 years? Not necessarily, but it's also not fair for them to try and "well, actually" it away and claim that people are better off than they actually are because one statistic has suddenly bucked the trend over the last 40 years.

It was because of him, at least in large part. He failed to act to get a federal protection for abortion in place despite repeated promises on the campaign trail and while in office to "codify Roe". In fact, he punted it until after the midterms, knowing full well that the Democrats were likely to lose control of at least one house of Congress and have no ability to get it passed.

not sure where your rent stats are from, it sounds like it’s form that graph that went viral earlier this year which was very wrong. There’s still a gap between real wage Vs rent growth, but it’s not nearly as huge as the numbers you’re saying here would make it.

Some people are definitely still behind where they were 3 years ago overall, but those people are overwhelmingly in the top 50% of the income brackets. People at the bottom’s wages out paced inflation for all but 6-7 months at the end of 2022/start of 2023, and based on the rates now it looks like they’re already close to catching back up to where they were before that 6-8 dip. We should be pointing that out! Especially since according to polling, it lines up with people’s personal experiences!

I wish i didn’t have to work with them period, but telling AIPAC to eff off because I can’t rush their job sure is satisfying.

Don’t forget his refusal to go after the court, not even threatening to pack it. The Roe overturning leaked and he still did nothing to pressure the court. The Trump judges lied under oath and not even a threat to call them to testify.

I think it should be obvious that the media and other elites in this country are far more concerned about anti imperialism /anti colonialism / anti capitalist rhetoric than antisemitism rhetoric. However, they also know that the national as a whole is more concerned about antisemitism than anti imperialism

So rather than combating actual antisemitism, media labels the stuff they want to combat instead as "antisemitism"

But that's still a lot of fucking people. And, perhaps more importantly for the context of this conversation, a lot of likely voters.

My point is that I don't get what good "well actually"-ing people does in persuading them. You just make them feel bad and they double down on their position, or (as we've seen repeatedly) they take credit for the positive changes themselves and blame the government for the bad things.

I think more effective messaging is meeting people where they are and being like "yeah, you're right, shit does suck, it's sucked for a long time, has only gotten worse, and that's going to keep happening unless we do something about it. So here is our plan to fix it, and here is how we're going to execute that plan if you put us in power."

And then, you know, actually follow through on it.

I wish shame still worked in America. The Uvalde photos would put a ban on the AR-15 and maybe gun sales by the end of the week.

Running as an incumbent on “everything is actually really bad” doesn’t usually work very well. They should be pivoting to the positives and then saying their plans will continue those gains and improve for everyone and continue to drive down inflation and etc

yeah my thoughts exactly. Don’t know how anyone could see those and be like “oh yeah nothing needs to change about our gun laws”, but yeah as you say…no shame
