I think I’d respect you more if you acknowledged that Biden clearly supports Israel and is wrong for it, but still thought it was the more pragmatic choice to vote for him over Trump in 2024. Instead of making tinfoil hat arguments for how Biden’s approach to Israel actually isn’t indefensible; we just need to have enough faith!

That was just a cunning bit of statecraft that is sure to bring about a US-brokered equitable ceasefire any moment now.

 

I’d have to assume any back channel convos boil down to Joe saying, “do it.”

 

I assume it’s basically “you’re too hot right now, cool it for a bit and then you can pick this up again with less attention once the public moves on.”

I'm pretty sure I've said this already lol, but yeah Biden clearly supports Israel! And it is still 100000% the more pragmatic choice to vote for him over Trump in 2024! But Biden being generally supportive of Israel, especially after 10/7, doesn't preclude the fact that, politically, the Biden Admin knows this isn't something that can go on forever with their full support without moderate and possibly significant political downsides for them on an electoral level. Both the admin and the Democratic Party as a whole can see that the general, overall consensus of support for this is basically "yeah okay we get it they can attack after what happened, but..." And how far that "but..." part stretches is obviously different for different blocks of voters. And it's been over time stretching further and further past what more and more voters are willing to stomach. So, even accepting that Biden is a pretty big Israel supporter, do you think Biden cares more about Israel or more about his own political consequences? Basically, you're kidding yourself if you don't think there are convos being had with Israeli leaders about what Biden can politically withstand on the homefront with his support. And many Dem Senators including Bernie seem to be confirming this! And they're seeing Bibi and the rest basically say "no fuck you we're gonna do what we want we want to annihilate them" and have been saying in recent weeks that it's time for Biden to reconsider because of that. Like it seems pretty clear at this point that US officials are trying to pressure Israel to chill the fuck out at a minimum, not even ceasefire, just be more precise and careful in their military operations, and Israel has no plans on doing so. And Dems and Biden Admin seem to be debating how much further they can go along with it, how much longer it can go on, before it becomes politically infeasible for them to continue with the unconditional support.

Literally no where in there am I saying Biden wants to secretly end the war for decent, human reasons (though I'm sure there are still human parts to him in there somewhere!), or that what they're doing with Israel support now is a good or defensible thing. The political realities at home mean the Admin has to be having these conversations at minimum with their Israeli counterparts. But as Bernie pointed out, so far it has amounted to mostly just asking them nicely to pull back a little and getting "no fuck you" in response.

The original “backchannels” meme in here was essentially that Biden would press the peace button for Gaza, which he wouldn’t. Yes he is certainly talking with Israelis and probably urging them to stop to some extent but who cares? Nothing meaningful comes from that. He could be doing things that would have meaningful results.

This is the part where I'm honestly not so sure. The support in Israel for what they're doing over there is so high that I don't even think US stopping aid is going to stop them right now. But just on a personal belief level, I want my tax dollars to not go towards supporting it at the very least, even if we can't stop them.
