Yesterday I was reading about the weird electoral college tie contingency election rules in the US Constitution.

There is a scenario where JD Vance or Tim Walz could become president. There is also an even more unlikely scenario where either Mike Johnson or Hakeem Jefferies could become president. There could even be a scenario where we get Kamala as POTUS and Vance as VP or Trump as POTUS and Walz as VP.

So say if in the unlikely case the electoral college is tied 269-269, then it goes to the Congress for a special "contingency election". The US House chooses the POTUS where each state's delegation gets 1 vote (how each state with different party members is supposed to come to a consensus isn't specified in the constitution). The US Senate chooses who the VP will be where each senator gets 1 vote. If the House is still in deadlock by Jan 20th whoever the Senate picks as VP will become POTUS. If the Senate is still in deadlock by Jan 20th then the Speaker of the House becomes VP. If both are still in deadlock by Jan 20th the Speaker becomes POTUS.

 

Can they both go away?

It is painfully obvious that the sudden focus on an imaginary migrant crisis in Ohio that happens to take place in a small town with above average poverty levels and fleeing manufacturing jobs is just a play to try and scare rural voters in a state that Trump won in 2020 by 400,000 votes.

Seems he’s conceded that he’s probably going to lose Minnesota and Wisconsin and is trying to appeal to the voters who are easily convinced that immigrants are going to burn down their Dollar General.

The cops were there but yeah the FDNY were the literal first responders, police were mainly just trying to move people back during the event. AFter it happened they did have to do a lot of clean up and help with search and rescue to be fair. My FIL has to get his lungs scanned every year due to him being there during the first weeks after breathing in all the crap to make sure he's not getting lung cancer.

 

The running joke amongst firefighters I've always heard is "what do police officers and firefighters have in common? they both wanted to be firefighters."

 

It will always be deeply funny to me that firefighters are respected and no one likes cops lmao

Anecdotal story - one of my gf’s coworkers recently left the hospital to work with first responders and is already back after only like 2 weeks because the cops she had to work with said homophobic shit to her AND were beating people for no reason
