"Don't raise taxes or I'll leave the country" is funny to me because the people who think this way are already doing everything they can to not pay taxes so who cares. Will probably help the housing crisis a bit to boot.

Isn't that the old saying, socialism never took root in America because no one wants consider themselves the proletariat, they all just think they're down on their luck millionaires.

Nah, I like my 403(b) and (now) 401(k). If I was deadset on keeping my pension, I'd have stayed in public edu making less than $30K/year in 2020, having to wait for 25 years to draw my benefit.

And when I left, if I kept my contributions in the pension, it only grew like a 1% savings account, and I lose my employer contributions. It made way more sense to roll it over to an IRA, and then work towards fully funding my 401k. I'd rather build flexibility into my family's plan vs have to rely on a privately managed pension plan (because even state teacher pensions are privately managed, with private industry advisors, with large chunks of assets not merely in stock and bond funds, but in individual companies, in hedge funds, and risky illiquid assets).

It was fascinating meeting with the chair of the board of directors of the state pension and reviewing the financials and rationale for the investment—which really is sound, even considering the points I made above—but it was too conservative, too constraining for someone who, after 25 years, would end up with a pension below the poverty line, and no social security to boot (in Missouri, teachers do not pay into SS, they pay into the state pension system).

I get this, but like, can we stop the genocide because it’s the right thing to do or does it *have* to be popular?

also people seem to forget that dems are in power right now.

  11. This seems like an issue with state funding of education and the pension more than with pensions as an investment instrument compared to 401ks. Like none of the crappy stuff you describe is because it's a pension as opposed to 401k, it's just that the pension is run poorly and and Missouri lets finance capital leech off it (surprise!)
