On Taiwan, America should pursue the strategy of microwaving their own balls.

 

My big hesitation here is that I worry that this framing oversimplifies two supremely complex situations a bit too much and ties the two situations together a little too concretely. I worry that this oversells how much the Ukraine situation plays into the calculus of what China's next strategic moves will be. If I'm pressed, I would say that China sees Russia invading Ukraine as an unfortunate annoyance that they would not have chosen themselves ideally but not the overriding issue weighing into their decision making on what their next moves should be. I can see making the argument however that a very strong, assertive message to Russia that this type of invasion will not be tolerated does also send a message to China, it's just that I don't think either side is unclear on this point as things stand currently.
