what if I made a completely different example devoid of the context of the actual thing? what then?

I think it’s just a totally different situations that can’t be compared. Putting Pedro Pascal as a lead role is immediately going to make the show more appealing and get a ton of more viewers and money. Having Bella as a lead role is not going to have much influence. How many people do you think decided to check out the show because of Pedro vs. Bella?

And no the accountant should not be making 10x more money but if they’ve been working for 25 years longer then it obviously shouldn’t be the same amount.

i would try to get it. It lowers the risk of long covid. Maybe try calling another doc or go to a different clinic or something.

yeah, experience and expertise haha. It’s also pretty much how every teachers union contract works too. The longer you do it and the more education you have, the more you get paid.

Relatedly on the paxlovid thing—any doctor that told me to take vitamin c and d for covid I would immediately side-eye. I already am side-eyeing the hell out of our fertility doc because she called covid a “weapon”. And I have a vague memory of her kind of hand waving our covid concerns in an early appointment that I thought I may have been reading the wrong way

But Hollywood, and especially actors in Hollywood and even moreso once you get up to the level of someone like Pedro Pascal, are not a good proxy for the labor market generally.

There are so many different factors at play there, including the bargaining power of each actor, the participation of agents, "pay" (e.g., fringe benefits) that is not captured in the per episode contractual amount, etc., that are not generally present when regular laborers are negotiating their salary.

Also for the pay thing—remember their agents are usually the ones negotiating these deals, and someone like Pedro who is in high demand is gonna have their agent go in there and say like “in the time it takes me to film this show, I’m gonna have to turn down other projects because I won’t have the time to do them, so I need the pay to make up for that” in their salary negotiations, whereas Bella probably didn’t have that leverage yet. She’ll certainly have it for her next projects!

This is a weird debate because I think using a big Hollywood production featuring an A-list actor who is really having a moment is not the best example to prove the argument, even though it may technically be an example of pay inequality. Hollywood and how much A-list stars make vs. other less famous actors, crew, technicians, and all of the other people who work on movies is a very specific situation.

I feel like it's similar to when super star athletes land those insanely high paying contracts, like when Alex Rodriguez got that $275,000,000.00 from the Yankees (I am not a sports person and have not watched sports in about 20 years) - yes it is technically an example of pay inequality because everyone else is not making $275,000,000.00, but it's a bad example of the argument that you're trying to make because it's such a specific and unique situation inside an already absurd industry.

Also, I love both Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey but at the end of the day I think all of those salaries are much too high for the work they are doing but that's not how the world works.

Isn't it pretty easy to just schedule posts to go out at certain times to make it look like you're at a different location than you actually are?

Sometimes you gotta take one for the team!

The team being rich people. And sometimes being your entire life. And taking one being starving and dying.

Really recommend (if you’re interested in bad people) Behind The Bastard’s podcast series about Clarence Thomas from last year. He’s a weird dude!
