Just feel the need to vent how frustrating it is to be able to keep me and my family safe from covid for 3 years only to most likely have it ruined by some kid coming to school after their 5 days is up because the CDC says it's cool, or worse a kid whose parents knowingly sent them to school with it/after an exposure/etc.

    So fucking depressing.

5 days seems to be fair now. The Covid patients we’re seeing are going home the same day. I don’t remember the last time I admitted someone because of Covid, they’re being hospitalized for the problems they came in with and the only thing Covid affects is them getting a private room.

The way bigger problem is sending people to school/going to work infected. I have a coworker that wouldn’t call off but she had a nasty cough. And since she didn’t call off, employee health doesn’t make you test.

If a child gets covid, I assume almost all schools don’t have a remote learning option anymore, but correct me if I am wrong. So if you make them stay home for 10 days, that’s a full week of school they are missing and can really put them behind. It’s a tricky situation. Have there been any studies done recently regarding how contagious someone still is after 5 days? If the risk is low enough it seems better to send them back after 5 days and miss less learning.

Anecdotally speaking, the big push from my kids' elementary school this year has been to make sure we send them to school. It's all about how they shouldn't miss any days unless they are very sick and talking about how behind they will be if they miss more than a day or two. There's simply no way that doesn't translate into kids who are contagious and probably shouldn't be at school being there. I know that's how schools have always been, but I guess I haven't really adapted to the mindset of COVID-19 just being something that's there and you have to deal with like how we used to treat colds & flus before this pandemic at schools.

Honestly, being a teacher and having a young kid I don't know how you guys made it as long as you did.

But the lesson from the pandemic should be that the way we treated colds and flus before was wrong and put everyone at needless risk.

Thankfully my kids' school has been the opposite of this. My older son had a low fever at school the other week, we had to come get him and bring him home early they told us he was not allowed back the next day.

I know this makes it difficult for some families where the parents can't take time off of work, etc., and I don't want to be callous toward that, but that's a different discussion about mandating paid sick days.

Oh, I agree with you 1000% - I wasn't saying that it should be that way, I was just saying that's how I see it being done a lot around me between my kids' school, where I work, when I go out to stores and stuff. I personally think it's fucking insane.

    Ah okay, gotcha.

I mean I haven't been masking generally when I go out, but if I'm feeling even a little sick (congestion, cough, etc.) I mask up. Same with the kids going to school, if they've got a runny or stuff nose but no fever and are going to school we make them wear masks.

That's basically how we've been doing it too. We've tried to keep them home if we think they're contagious, and the school has said we should only keep them home if they have a high fever. My son for instance almost never spikes a fever, like me. So there've been times where he is obviously sick and almost certainly contagious but he doesn't hit the criteria so-to-speak for missing school, but we keep him home then.
