I’m not sure. I think their are other factors at play that aren’t external factors, which are a big part of it:

    - the police officers involved being black
    - action being taken against the officers pretty quickly
    - the footage being held back and it’s release being highly choreographed
    - the sense that the media and establishment were pre-empting a reaction.. I think part of protest is for shining the spotlight on issues and trying to platform it. In this case the media were making it their main story and the President was already quite involved. It was damage control from the word go - the tweet in this thread when someone had raised that this shocking incident had occurred suggested the same.

The police officers being black shouldn’t matter much at all. The institution itself is racist and classist for historical reasons that have never been addressed and yes they hire black people in the institution. The media focusing on prior incidents because the officer was white was always missing the cause for a symptom. It’s always been the case that you can’t diversify your way into the police being good or less racist for the same reasons funding for training won’t work. It’s just treating the symptoms and not addressing the disease.

Late to sex scene talk but as long as human beings are creating art they’ll create art about human experiences and sex is a part of that. Yes, they have been gratuitous and lines have been crossed with actors before. That’s why intimacy coordinators have become such a big part of shooting movies and TV, the way sex scenes have been shot has changed a lot in the last decade especially. To call sex scenes pointless when it comes to art though feels regressive.

A lot of sex scenes are pointless though. There are certainly exceptions and scenes that are integral to a story but if you aren’t just watching thoughtful directors and storytellers you’re probably watching a lot of gratuitous sex scenes. And if there’s been a troubling history with women and nude scenes I don’t think the onus is on those of us who don’t care for them to be nuanced.

Where I’m at is, sex scenes are gonna exist. Sex is going to be a subject or part of aspects of art forever. The onus is on those who make art to treat those involved responsibly and treat the subject responsibly, the same for all art. If the stance is that sex scenes shouldn’t exist, I don’t agree.

This makes sense to me. Of course sex scenes aren’t going anywhere including and maybe especially the dumbest of them so I just ask to be let to say I don’t care for them knowing it won’t mean anything to anyone.

also it sucks and I get it because obviously policing is a racist institution that led to this event despite the offenders also being black, but the vast majority of people are going to completely zone out if you start talking about racism in this case because they can’t or won’t connect the dots, to me it’s easier to just call the system of policing corrupt and violent and lead them down that path and eventually maybe MAYBE they’ll realize the role white supremacy plays in that fact and how black people can be agents of white supremacy both wittingly or unwittingly. I just think if you lead with race when discussing this incident most people are going to have a hard time getting it unless you lead them there first

Last summer, my girlfriend was called about birds on the beach that were acting sick and presumed to be positive with avian flu, and when she got there she didn’t see as many as she had expected and it turned out that some random person decided to take some of them home to try to help them. We’re honestly lucky this thing hasn’t turned into a full blown pandemic, lol.

One thing that the murder of Tyre Nichols shows is how a lot of police reforms people are pushing for will not stop things like this from happening. Memphis enacted reforms in 2020 after George Floyd was killed. Memphis police department is already practicing all 8 policies outlined by the 8 Can't Wait campaign. And that isn't to say those things aren't important, they definitely are and all police departments should have them implemented because it certainly can make a difference and prevent certain situations. But all the training in the world and policies prohibiting the use of force would not have stopped what happened here. And things like requiring officers to wear body cams doesn't prevent abuse - though at least luckily it does expose them. The problem is bigger than policies, it's the culture of policing and system behind it all that is rotten to its core. And I honestly just don't know what the right answer to fix it is or if there even is one, I am not sold on any solution.

good thread. That Atlanta unit was involved in the killing of 92 year old Kathryn Johnston in 2006, they subsequently planted drugs on her body. They also participated in the Eagle Bar raid which ultimately was the impetus for the unit to be disbanded.

I’m not saying it should or shouldn’t matter but it seems inarguable to me that it’s a large reason the public response is different.

I think to most of the public, the notion that an institution like policing can be racist structurally, beyond the individual prejudices of its members, is still unheard of and unfathomable. As long as there’s an apparent element of choice somewhere in the victim’s path (could’ve not run, could’ve studied harder, could’ve applied to more jobs, etc), the institution itself is off the hook.
