There used to be 10 items or less lanes! Not anymore! Thanks Obama!

But the same efficiency could be accomplished with cashiers and express lanes with item limits.

I don't have that issue though, I'm going to Costco because I need supplies for a family of 5 and it's just more cost effective and efficient.

Don't forget the inflation! They went to 12 items or less, then 15 items or less, and now it's just all higgledy-piggledy!!!

Eye-opening video. It's something I never really thought about (since I'm nowhere close to owning a home).

I do self-checkout because I hate people and don't want to force an interaction with someone lol. I will go to a checkout register if I have a lot of shit though

Are you the type of person who will roam a store endlessly trying to find something rather than asking an employee where it is? :-p

Being a vegan, self checkout has saved me so much money. Oh, those $9.99/lb cotton candy grapes…yea, those are being rung up as bananas lol.

I'm sure glad I remember the code for bananas from my cashiering days

I've spent enough of my life as a cashier, I'd almost always prefer to have someone else check me out and bag my stuff. Unfortunately store like to have 10-30 checkouts, but only open two nowadays and sometimes you have to do self checkout. What's more frustrating is even stores that don't have self checkout, still only open one or two checkouts now (I'm looking at you ALDI and Vons).

If I'm just grabbing a few items, I'll go to self-checkout. But if I'm buying a week's worth of groceries I'm going to the manned checkout. I found it to be way quicker once you get past 7 or 8 items. You the cashier can scan everything really quickly while I bag. Plus they usually know the random PLU codes for bulk items that I'd have to spend time looking up.

My CVS only has one employee in the entire store, and going to the register is useless because they're usually busy working in one of the aisles. I feel bad for them, pretty dangerous being alone until 10pm

Lol that was my dad growing up and it drove me nuts xD.

I hate people too, but my lack of patience is a greater hurdle for me

Another reason I love Trader Joe's is you don't even have to empty your cart onto a conveyor belt. So much easier.

No. Even with faster staff, waiting in line is going to be longer than just walking up and checking myself out. Like someone said above, if the people ahead of you have dozens of items, it’s going to take time regardless how fast staff are.

As a former cashier, I disagree. It's a lot faster and easier to bag things up and organize them in a carriage when you can have all items on the conveyer belt, rather than juggling bags with a carriage full of items you haven't scanned yet

Well people abused that and would constantly have more than the set amount. You can’t trust the general public. Some of them might even steal shit just because whatever reasons they tell themselves to justify pointlessly stealing. You used to be a sheriff. What happened to you? Haha

What monsters are putting bags in before finishing scanning? There’s your problem.
