I think personal responsibility annoys us for the exact reason you said, it’s a buzzword that lacks meaning with a second thought. Only ever used to deny help to the poor, meanwhile the rich never have to deal with even thought of personal responsibility for their actions. Don’t even get me started on police accountability. It’s a conservative buzzword to blame the poor for their suffering and is never used for anyone else who’s actions have major consequences for others.

I would benefit from it as well. I started with around 40k and have around 15k left so my hill isn't that I didn't get any loans because I'm smart, I'm not paying for yours. At this point I have digressed from my place on the hill anyway and fully recognize it has popular support (around 65-70%, though I'm sure if that entire 70% is for a full blanket forgiveness or something income based).

Me and wife have discussed about this shit for years and put full blame on high school and society's lack of transparency when it comes to options after high school. Its ridiculously ingrained that you HAVE to go to college immediately after high school. No discussion about taking some time off to figure out a plan.

I'm never having kids but if I did, they don't go to college unless they tell me somewhat of a reason why. The argument about "college is where you go to figure it out ".... not anymore. Not for $100k+

I graduated with about 20K in debt, but that’s also because I was a massive underachiever in high school and ended up having to go to CC for my first two years worth of credits (which I did for part time over a 3-4 year period, in addition to having had dropped out for a couple of years). I went to a small private non-profit after that instead of the state school specifically because of the price haha. Had I actually tried in HS and got the mostly A’s I was capable of I probably would have also ended up at a state school with 60-100K in debt like everyone else.

If you agree with all those points what does it matter how an individual frames the argument? Maybe they're not as articulate or well-versed in the subject, doesn't mean they weren't victim to the same points you're saying you agree with. But continue to argue semantics in one sentence and say you agree there's a systemic issue in the next and see how serious people take you.

  10. My advice: more energy on stuff your money is going toward that is killing people, less energy on stuff your money is going toward that is helping them.

Yeah my wife and I own a home, but the only reason we were able to is because when my grandmother died her estate sold and was split between my mother and her 3 siblings, after my mom paid off her student loan debt (at 55!) she helped us some with a down payment, otherwise, we would never be able to buy a house.

Haha yeah probably not the best mentality, but unfortunately unavoidable to some. Luckily I found a great job out of college, but life would be a lot easier without having to pay close to $1k a month for the next 15-20 years of my life heh.

i hear this same argument when it comes to immigration. Ive met many "legal" immigrants who shit on "illegals" for not doing it the right way....or it's unfair that they got to come in the right way and yet we're trying to give them a free pass.

But hey man, the right thing is the right thing even some people didn't get to benefit from it. Look at the MILLIONs of people who got locked up for weed.... fucking sucks for them doesn't it.

Feel like this would be a better framework for the argument for those “You don’t *deserve* to have your loans just magically forgiven” types — if you make it an issue of who “deserves” what then those people will never be swayed. Gotta go big picture with them, because they’re also probably likely to be pretty economically conservative (or at least will want to posture as such) and will reflexively want to go along with something if it makes “economic” sense.

I honestly have no idea how much student loan debt I have. I went to a state school right out of high school, dropped out and paid that for years and years, and I think I paid that off a couple years ago. Now I have student loan debt from going back to school for nursing. I always just try to get the monthly payments as low as possible and take any and all deferments that I can get my hands on. Basically I try to ignore it and give zero fucks whether it is ever paid off. I suppose I'm hoping someday it'll either be wiped out or I just die or something.

Financially this is not good advice for someone else to do, but it works for me. I was able to buy a house and have kids and everything but it is definitely brutal. I can't wrap my head around the people who say things like they had to pay theirs so other people should have to as well. Deeply fucked. It reminds me a lot of when people talk down about people experiencing homelessness or struggling with substance use.

When people make that argument my attitude is honestly that I mentally kinda thank them in my head for letting me know that they are a piece of shit garbage person right off the bat so I can act accordingly.

Also, not gonna lie - I already bought some CPC containing mouthwash. Every little bit of protection is gonna help the next few months.

  20. This is the argument I've made to boomers that usually works best. It's a unilateral stimulus that we can do, right now, that will help the economy in a multitude of ways.

    (Also, it'll help win elections.)
