I've never encountered this policy in actual life, and I never would have considered that this is how it would play out in reality.

My company doesn't pay out PTO when you leave either, and we accrue it throughout the year lol. I definitely always make sure to not let myself accrue too much in case something happens. But yeah I heard that from people at unlimited PTO companies too.

I've been fortunate at this job though that the 2 different supervisors I've had never give me any flack for taking time off, they encourage it actually. My supervisor now has straight up said "you need to get away from the craziness of this place as much as you can." lol

It's incredibly common in marketing agencies, which is where I got my start.

Damn, is that even legal? I thought most states had labor laws that require companies to payout unused PTO.

Yeah if I worked in the private sector and had unlimited PTO, you can bet your ass I'd be taking at least 4-6 weeks worth throughout the year. Of course, I'm not in that situation so. Perhaps I'd use less because I'd probably be sick less often if I were in an office or whatever instead of being exposed to 100+ gross kids coughing all over the place every day.

We get 10 days off every year and it rolls over year after year. Technically 3 of the days are personal days, but on our system now all the days are lumped together into hours. The 3 personal days at this point are just a category so that we can call out ahead of time for those 3 days, instead of hte sick days where most people will call out that morning or the night before.

Yea, it's something that sounds awesome if you've never had it. But in the future if I go to another company that offers it I'd have some follow-up questions around company culture and PTO.

From a quick Google search in NY it says as long as they have a written policy that says you forfeit it when you leave they don't have to. It's in the employee handbook they have. They used to pay it out when I first started but changed it like a year or two ago when they switched owners. It's definitely pretty slimey when the benefits here are already kind of lame. I've also noticed when people put in two weeks here a lot of times they tell them they can just finish out the week and then not come back which is also shitty.

I was looking this up the other day I think only 24 states have laws requiring unused pto to be paid out.

In Illinois, UK variant increased 69% (not nice) over the past week to 794 from 471, while Brazilian variant ran up 113% to 164 from 77. I sure feel great about what the future holds.

This is the attitude I've taken on. I definitely used to take minimal time off and I have nothing but regret over that. Now I'll try to take a few odd days off per month in addition to few longer vacations every year.

Ugh. That makes sense. I don't know why I was optimistic about laws that benefit labor in the US.

Yeah if we had unlimited PTO I’d be taking at least 4 weeks of vacation. Every other Friday to start with.

My husband and I were talking the other day. Our goal all along was for us both to get vaccinated as quickly as we could. Where we live, we haven't had an active case since December? And even then I think it was only 1. My zip code only had 38 total. If I would have gotten sick without the vaccine, I absolutely wouldn't have survived it.

also, sorry to double post..but i worked for a very large Catholic hospital system..Easter wasn't a holiday for us. We were open and getting paid standard pay. That made zero sense.

My last job had unlimited PTO, but they were also very flexible with when you came in and left, if you worked from the office or home, it didn't really matter as long as your work got done. I ended up not taking that much PTO because I really didn't need to, if I needed an hour or two here or there, or to work from home for some reason, I could just do it. I took a week or 2 of vacation most summers and then the occasional personal/mental health day.

We also worked it out among our team that during the holidays we would all be remote and if we needed someone to cover a day or part of one here or there because we would truly be unavailable that was fine. Thankfully we were always a pretty cohesive and responsible team so it always worked out.

  25. my last company had “unlimited pto” but the ceo told leadership that anything over 3 weeks (in a year) would be excessive and strongly discouraged lmao
