Was listening to this Mike Davis interview and he talked about Appalachia as being the orphan of the Democratic Party, and i think that is a good way of framing things, better than i was doing the other day. I worry about that becoming the case with Ohio and certain other states of the “rust belt.” These are areas hurt terribly by modern American domestic and economic policies, and to abandon them is immoral IMO, but more to the interests of a number of folks in this thread, it is a bad strategy in the long- and middle-term.

Someone (i believe David) posted about how a northern county in Ohio lost ground between the 2018 governor’s race and here. Well, i think that’s what you should expect when you aren’t investing in reaching those types of communities as a party. Trump might be the devil, but if you aren’t bothering to argue that you make a better candidate to those communities than he does, they’ll probably vote for him, especially when you allow him to define you (it’s a burgeoning trend similar to what we saw in Miami-Dade) for most or all of the race. Some folks in here say that a presidential campaign can’t take a state-by-state, county-by-county strategy, and maybe that’s true. But i can tell you for a fact that the Ohio Democratic Party only invests in Cincinnati/Columbus/Cleveland any more, mmmaybe Dayton/Akron/Toledo. The DNC is virtually uninvolved. To me, i view this as the party choosing its constituents - they’d rather be the party of offended strivers than the one that needs to deliver results to a constituency. And on the molecular level, we ought to be very worried about what’s happening in those cities. Obviously we aren’t there yet, but if the Republicans get to a place where they are winning 25% of Black voters, 40% of Latinx voters, and are the only game in town for white voters in rustbelt/rural areas, there aren’t enough upwardly mobile suburban commuters to make up for those numbers.

unnecessarily pedantic, but it should say “a managing director”. GS probably has dozens to hundreds of “managing directors”
