Sherrod Brown should be given a bigger voice in the Democratic Party and it should have happened years ago if we are being honest. Gotta ask why just two years ago he was able to carry the state by 8 points when dems lost badly 4 years ago and this year.

I’ve said many times Sherrod Brown has a platform that is appealing to moderates, progressives, and even some conservatives which is why he is as popular as he is there.

It is correct. Ohio is a red state now. Divert resources to the other mid-wests and Georgia/AZ/NC. Local party needs to rebuild and hope for another demographic shift in preferences again to be competitive on a statewide level. The growth in Columbus probably isn't enough to offset the very low growth in Cincy and the shrinkage in Cleveland and the WWC shift to the right. Maybe you can hope the lack of Trump on the ticket means those WWC come back home to Dems and/or don't show up to vote for Repubs, but....not sure if that's enough of a likelihood to say it's still competitive. Especially if Biden/Dems aren't able to get anything significant done to help unions.

Basically, look at the losses the Dems took there in 2016 and 2020, and then look at Virginia or Colorado and try to tell meh those aren't blue states now.

I don’t think the dems should abandon any state. Like I said, there’s a reason Sherrod Brown is popular there. You have to run candidates appealing to the demographic of the state.

What happened to the talk of the democrats having a 50 state strategy? Bernie was all for that in 2016. Howard Dean back in the day talked about that. Let’s talk about that again.

When you're running a presidential election you have finite resources to spend in the most effective ways possible. Based on 2016 and 2020, I would say those resources are best not spent on trying to win Ohio's electoral votes.

Local races are different and of course Dems should keep trying to win state legislature seat, congressional seats, and senate seats. But the next presidential campaign is better off shifting focus elsewhere at this point. And with gerrymandering I don't even know how many competitive House seats there are in Ohio. I think Tim Ryan's district is the only one...and I'd bet money that his is the one that gets erased in the redraws.

David performing the common lib practice of making the wrong assumptions and drawing the wrong lessons, on his way to a conclusion that is both morally reprehensible and strategically dogshit.

Imagine republicans in 2013 saying “Ohio is a blue state now, guess we should just get the fuck out of there”

I don’t know if you remember this, but I do and last year you were saying the dem candidate should travel to Montana and maybe Wyoming to talk environmental policy because that could be appealing there. We know those states were going red no matter what. But I actually liked that idea. 50 state strategy. Find what issues could be appealing in certain states and try it out. Not saying that they need to go all in on Ohio, but I wouldn’t completely abandon it and write it off. Look to see what issues are appealing there and again, see why Sherrod brown does so well and replicate it.

  23. A ‘50‘ state strategy is a bad one for a presidential candidate, especially a democrat, especially when we still have the electoral college.

I dunno if people who routinely post the takes of the people that completely flubbed Bernie’s campaign can talk about making the wrong assumptions and drawing the wrong lessons.

Strategically it makes sense. Dems should get the fuck out of Ohio just like the Repubs should get the fuck out of Colorado. They’re not getting those electoral votes. Maybe future events will cause a shift back in the other direction, or maybe the allure of Trump not being there will help. But they apparently can’t even trust their own polling there to point them which direction it’s going, so...spend that money in bluer swing states where you can win.

Fair point. It would be much easier to do if the electoral college wasn’t looming over us. It sucks, cause there are “red” states dems could try to make an appeal to
