I think if your messaging is consistent and across the board with the same thing repeated time after time, you can speak it into reality. He could just brush it off as “well that was the easy explanation but the truth is what I support is basically FDR new dealism” and he did try that a lot but basically he seemed to be trying to relabel FDR and his policies a democratic socialism (which is kinda correct lol) instead of relabeling himself as an FDR New Dealer. I think the ladder is more likely to be successful than the former just because of the years of brainwashing people get in this country, i.e. “FDR good, socialism bad”

I do think in our personal lives we should continue to try to convince people “hey we were pretty much Dem socialist before it’s okay”, but when campaigning its probably not quite effective yet. I know if and when I ever get to teach US history, I’ll make sure I draw some lines for my students when we get to the New deal heh

The press and the other candidates would eat him alive if he tried to hide from the label. The way he’s answered questions about socialism thus far has been great.

 

I think I now have both my mom and my dad committed to voting for Bernie in MO on Tuesday.

Having two conversations with two friends within like an hour of each other one of who is super worried that Bernie can't win and the other is super worried that Biden can't win is quite the "fun" experience

We've spent weeks in here talking about how the press is tarnishing Sanders for both past and present comments. It's basically cost him the primary. I'd much rather he try a new strategy since sticking the socialist label doesn't work.

Put another way...if Sanders swaps the label for something like FDR New Dealism but never changed his core policies, would you or any other Bernie supporter stop? I wouldn't, especially if it convinced people on the fence to support him over Biden.

It's all hypothetical anyway, probably too late to try such a strategy.
