Are there any reputable online retail sites selling face masks? My mom’s friend made a bunch and my dad mailed me two of them and I wash after every use. But I want to to have a little variety.

The revisionist history of Bush is remarkable. You shouldn’t get credit for being slightly less of an idiot.

  3. Lots of basic cloth ones out there now. I like the ones Los Angeles apparel is selling because they go behind the head not the ears. The ear strings hurt too much for me.

  8. I always find these arguments ... weak at best with the whole “but the compensation would be great” (in the replies) because it never addresses *who* would sign up for that risk (and long term risk): it’s the marginalized. No rich family kid is doing this, and I can’t agree that’s a moral position to take.

Hmm. Torn on this a little bit. I think if there are people willing to risk it voluntarily, I'd generally say let them considering it's for a great cause. But I def get your point on who would be...targeted in terms of people that would feel the need to volunteer because they're poor and need the money.

Is that really the only way to do it btw? can't they like....take someone's vaccinated blood or something and try to infect it with the virus? Or would they actually need like a piece of human tissue like a part of a lung or something to see?

Isn't the risk from the disease for health people pretty low? I'd honestly give serious thought to signing up to test a vaccine like that, even without additional compensation, depending on what the actual risks involved were.

Lots of people join the military out of a sense of one's duty to the country. Of course, the military also preys upon the marginalized as well. But I feel like you could get a lot of people willing to signup for the good of the country/world. And so then you wind up in this paradoxical state... is it more morally compromised to not compensate the people who volunteer, or to compensate them and deal with marginalized people sacrificing themselves for the compensation?

Ultimately, the moral complications of marginalized people signing up for the risk of challenge testing stems not from the fact that its unethical to compensate challenge testing, but that its unethical to have marginalized people in your society.

true, but if there are really bad long term effects we're kinda fucked regardless, right? a million people have tested positive for this thing. millions more have it.

Currently 1021 people in the 30-39 range in king county have tested positive. two of them have died. So the short term risks don't seem that bad.

so I donno. I'm not rushing out to figure out how I can volunteer but if the opportunity presents itself to help test a vaccine I'd probably give strong consideration to signing up for it.

It's gonna be so sick in 20 years time when President Barron is botching a national emergency and the media spend their time saying "Donald trump could teach him a thing or two about handling a crisis".

You could not pay me enough to test out a vaccine and risk my life so a drug company can make billions off it.

Yeah, that's the thing, though. I don't know how voluntary it really is when we as a country already are bad at taking care of the poor under normal circumstances... and then factoring in the current economic landscape due to this virus.

It'd feel less gross if we actually took care of people in need enough for me to believe anyone who signs up is doing so either altruistically, or because they like risks & don't mind a little extra dough. But as is, it's kinda like society as a whole is holding people who are "worth less" hostage, right? Or, maybe even like a smaller scale version of the people who wanna sacrifice poor & vulnerable people at the altar of the market.
