Few posts make me literally gasp. But that did it.

I know we’re not high on the New York Times, but The Daily did a great episode two weeks ago on Chinese people being bullied because of the racist notion that they’re to blame. It’s heartbreaking and will make you want to punch people like Bill Maher’s face into a fine, racist paste. Please stop and think about what you’re saying.

 

I like nuance, too.

In this particular case, there are, um... let's say, "nuances" to what you're saying that are racist, regardless of your intention.

Which, if you're not actually a consciously racist person (which I imagine you're not), is all the more reason why you should reassess what you're saying & course correct. Because, as someone who isn't into racism, you should wanna do your part to combat all racism, including that which has unknowingly dripped into ideas you've taken for granted.

 

i mean, even if that was true, who do you actually you're warning that eating bats is bad? anyone in here? do you really think that? is it more likely someone who eats bats is going to see your words and say "damn i should stop eating bats" or is it more likely that someone is going to see your words and think "fucking chinese eating bats i'm gonna go be racist to them"

 

I feel sad about this. I'm sorry if you all took it the wrong way. I'm still going to think it's not ok to have exotic animals like snakes in markets because the connection to covid.(I would say this for any country that has that) It's important to me to stay true to my gut. I feel like im shut down and called names right away so it's not even worth trying to discuss. I think a big part of it has to do with in these times it's not ok for some reason to be critical of any countries practices without seeming racist. Even if the country has horrible practices like subservient women. It's not allowed to be critiqued at all.

TBF, when she was shown evidence that it wasn’t from someone eating a bat, she changed her stance.

But we don’t have to make racist accusations to get across the point that places do need to better regulate what animals, alive or dead, are present at places where there are lots of people. Not only for our own health but for conservation purposes as well. We keep building and encroaching on places like bat habitats and were gonna royally fuck ourselves as a species both in disease and in lost biodiversity that we depend on to survive. That goes for America, Europe, China, etc.

Not sure I want to endure a summer full of insects after we’ve forced bats to near extinction

it's not even a fact that it came from snakes btw. we don't know where it came from. bats comingle and die in spaces where meat pigs live. that's just as plausible a vector right now. the jump to say its from "exotic" animals is a racist trope

I know you came in a few months ago sayinn you were somewhat new to politics and such IIRC so, just be careful about what you read and believe out there. China’s govt has some blame in this but not so much because they have “weird” practices like “eating bats” and more similar to a problem many other countries have with regulations around animals and humans together, and lack of respect for animals in their natural habitats. That last one especially is def not just a China problem, sadly.
