unemployment issues:

The state of Georgia owes me (and probably like a million other people) at least $3600. My industry shut down because of COVID - I was a server in a very busy restaurant. Georgia has already received funding for unemployment relief; but is just totally fucking failing to process claims.

Even though my UI claim has been “processed” that just means it’s awaiting a decision from a Claims Examiner. ....it has been in this phase for THREE MONTHS. This is the equivalent of texting someone “hey, can you start paying me the thousands of dollars you owe me” and them leaving you on read. I have contacted the office over 50 times by voicemail and email (no human ever answers the call) and gotten zero correspondence.

A brief google search brings up TONS of articles (including a newsletter for the county I lived in) saying that I’m not the only one with this problem and it’s widespread.

Even if I’m not eligible for UI, I should be getting a separate thing called PUA (pandemic unemployment assistance)... which *everyone* who is unemployed and can’t get UI, is supposed to be eligible for. But the problem is I can’t apply for that until they actually reject my UI claim. As long as my claim is stuck in the system pending a decision, I can’t get any of the money GA owes me.

I’m extremely nervous guys. I am about to have literally no money after I move & pay my first months rent. Is anyone else having problems getting their UI approved??

 

We’re in WI, but my wife was furloughed in april for 10 weeks. She filed weekly and we never got anything. I think we’re around $9,000 that’s owed to her. We’re fortunate and had a savings, but we nearly drained it by the time she was called back. This was almost 16 weeks ago and we still haven’t received her back pay.

 

Right! Like I’m almost 30 years old and I’m gonna have to ask my mom for money if this keeps up. I hate this. I wish I could get one phone call or email telling me “we see you and your claim is still in progress” or SOMETHING.

I am a smoker who had asthma as a child so I am in two risk categories. I’m really not trying to work in a service job right now - I’ve applied for tons of work from home jobs, and applied to get back into college. But it’s getting to the point where I’m not gonna have a choice, and I just will have to work in a high risk grocery store or pharmacy or something, and hope some mouthbreather without a mask doesn’t get in my face. Ughhh.

 

Yeah the unemployment system was always awful at paying people and this has just made it way worse. I work with people every week who are being evicted because they still haven’t received a dime of unemployment despite qualifying and applying two months ago. It’s really outrageous and isn’t covered enough or discussed enough right now in political circles.

 

We have a pandemic that is going to last many months but yeah let’s pay people through the understaffed weekly program. So stupid. That and the lack of acknowledgement that there is also now a health care coverage crisis that is even worse than our under-insurance system drives me crazy. Trump has been a disaster but Congress hasn’t done shit either. Our entire government should be scrapped.

 

I appreciate replies even if there isn’t a solution, I just need some camaraderie. My current friends im staying with are upset I haven’t been able to help pay. I’m using my last savings to move in to a room in a friend’s house, back in DC area where I used to live. (It was the only cheap rent I could find ASAP in a city that is walkable - I don’t have a car).

but like, it’s legitimately not my fault that I’m getting NOTHING. And I’m realizing as I do research that this is a big national problem that isn’t getting talked about.

 

I was out for 6-8 weeks in NY and by the time they sent me an email to claim it I was back at work and randomly weeks later they sent me a lump sum on a debit card it was so frustrating and I'm relatively lucky and privileged

 

Is there any indication that Congress will try to act on extending the CARES Act before the August recess now that it’s ending soon?

Yeah I never got a dime from GA or FL either, even after I was approved and sent in evidence of looking for jobs. I was told not to reapply for another week until money hit my account...three months later, nothing

 

This next will be very telling. If they don't extend the CARES act or create another stimulus package people are going to start struggling and freaking out. I have a sneaking suspicion they will republicans will agree to something, only because of they don't it pretty much seals Trumps fate in November. If it were a non election year they probably wouldn't do shit sadly.

 

It took my wife two days after applying for NY unemployment to start collecting. She was only out of work for a few weeks, but we had no problems.

Meanwhile, I'm going on about a month in NJ without being able to claim. Their system just has me certify the same week, week after week. And it's a week where I was still working, so I'm not collecting for it, anyway. Luckily, this is just for my summer job, and I only applied because I'm owed the money. I feel terrible for anyone in your shoes dealing with such neglect and incompetence.

These states need to get their shit together.

I posted this a few pages ago, but the CARES unemployment money runs out on Friday (Saturday for NY). Rent is due the following Friday. There should be a lot of pressure to get something done this week.

However, Democrats better make sure that this new recovery plan is meaningful and not just another payday for the rich.

Ugh, I think it’s going to happen. I see SO MANY Kennedy signs everywhere and there’s just so many people who will go to the ballot and say “oh well we def need a Kennedy!”

I feel like the same people who have always been VERY into Biden are also the same people who will go vote for Kennedy.

 

Yeah. I think next Wednesday will be the last time Oregon residents get the extra 600. I'm hoping they figure something out. Luckily I've saved a lot of my unemployment, but I know a lot of people will be hurting. I don't know if we will get a full 600 a week again, but even half of that would be nice until the end of the year.
