Resident dialysis patient checking in. I did just see this on Twitter. A few thoughts(this might end up long):

"While donors don’t have to pay for their medical procedures, they do typically have to cover other expenses like travel to and from the hospital, child and elder care they can’t perform while they’re recovering, lost wages while they’re off from work, and so on. "...I do think lost wages, childcare, etc are huge reasons we don't have enough living donors. Recovery is a decent amount of time that people simply cannot afford. When I first got sick, I received a kidney from one of my 18 cousins. He's the only one that stepped up and I fully believe it had to do with cost/childcare. I'd never hold it against any of the rest of them, but they would have struggled with the childcare aspect as they all have kids. And sidenote* yes, I can travel. It's actually VERY easy while on dialysis.

As far as the "underused organs" portion of this article, it makes me wonder how many were turned down by the patients set to receive them? That is a patient's right. You are informed of, at the time of your call, if the organ is a high risk organ or not. If a chain of several people say no, that adds to the time the organ is viable. (Trump was saying something along the lines of so many were getting wasted because they ran out of time to get them delivered, though it was almost 13 hours before I was put on a table for my transplant) Bottom line, the most suitable organs should be used. I hope viable organs aren't being wasted in such huge numbers. If this action makes it so more viable, suitable organs are available for transplant, thats GREAT. I just hope that this EO takes away our right to know/refuse high risk organs.

And finally, the portion about better care. I currently am an in-center hemodialysis patient at a Fresenius clinic.
"Medicare has covered all end-stage kidney disease treatment since 1973" The bold statement is not entirely true. Yes, I am automatically entitled to Medicare coverage because of ESRD. They do not pay 100%. I carry a secondary insurance through my father's retirement (thanks ACA) and i STILL got a call yesterday from Fresenius saying that my secondary denied payments for January and February and I was asked if I could pay the $1200 in full at the time of the call. I've been hearing rumblings that the government was going to try and start pushing the more able-bodied patients to do home dialysis and it seems that may happen. In order to do home hemodialysis, I would need a caretaker here for the 4 hours 3x a week. My husband cannot take that kind of time off work. My plumbing and electric would have to be completely updated at MY cost. I previously did home peritoneal dialysis for 7 years. It does not require plumbing and electric updates, but the machines are pieces of garbage. I went through 14 of them in a 2 year span (resulting in shortened or missed treatments because of it) After my mom passed, I ended up being really lax about my treatments and it nearly killed me. I rely on the routine of going to my clinic 3x a week. That's what keeps me alive. If I were forced into home dialysis and chose the route of peritoneal, I would not be able to work due to my commute time, scheduled hours, etc. When I was on it previously, I had to be in bed for 10 hours minimum. I don't get home until after 9pm from work and have to be back at 745am. It simply would not work for me.

And rewarding the nephrologists for directing patients to transplant? That sounds like a hefty bonus for referring someone who may or may not be suitable for transplant. That's dicey. And preventing the disease progression? That is MOSTLY on the patient. Diet and controlling blood pressure are the 2 most important ways in slowing down the progression. Some also need a dialysis treatment here and there for a kidney kick start.

Sorry for the long post. This subject is my life, literally. I'm happy with the care I receive. I'm alive because of it. I hope any and all changes that occur do not end up being detrimental to us. The thing I struggle with the most is the guidelines my wonderful doctors and nurses have to follow are made by people who have probably never stepped foot in a clinic.

ETA: reminder that his dumbass administration is still trying to repeal ACA. oy.

  17. Foxconn will only create 1500 jobs, says Wisconsin governor - The Verge
The Foxconn factory in Wisconsin will only create 1,500 jobs when it starts production next May, Gov. Tony Evers told CNBC yesterday. That’s the same number Foxconn has been saying since it shifted plans for the factory a few months ago, and far short of the 13,000 jobs that were promised when President Trump broke ground a year ago.

I'm confused on impeachment, and honestly not trying to be a dick, so I apologize for my ignorance.

What good does impeaching him do? The house and senate BOTH have to vote to impeach for him to be removed from office correct? Is there any chance in hell that happens with Mitch still running the Senate? Again, this is genuinely coming from a place of not understanding, so anyone who's got a blog they like, or if someone has a post they can quote I'd appreciate it.

Elizabeth Warren had the best answer on this mindset. First, impeachment brings things to light and can shift public opinion. If the Dems don’t do anything they’re basically saying nothing Trump has done is bad and there’s no problem. You want to be on record with the reality that crimes were committed, and are still being committed.

Secondly, it’s the right thing to do. Despite the purely political reasons why a criminal president can’t really be held to justice with so many enablers/co conspirators in Government, you should at least try. That sends the right message, that this kind of criminal corrupt shameless behavior is not acceptable and that no matter who is committing the crime, they will be held accountable.

Third, even if it doesn’t work it works. Clinton was impeached for less and with less public support behind it, and despite a great economy it hurt his reputation badly. Democrats lost the next election that they probably would have won otherwise. It could be about controlling the narrative, building support, showing some willingness to fight, using power wisely, whatever. It’s a move that should have positive results if handled correctly, especially going into an election.

I’m pretty excited for the public Mueller testimony even though it’ll just be him restating what the report says.

Someone absolutely has to get him to say that the report does not say “no collusion” though.
