No, context matters. There was an unexpected flood of unaccompanied minors and the asylum system was over burdened so they tried to find somewhere to keep people while they were processing their claims. The major problem there is ICE is still a disgusting organization that still treated people like shit and less than human.

This president is purposefully making these people’s lives miserable and hard in hopes that it’ll be seen as punishment and discourage people from coming. Separating families on purpose is a part of that. The admin is also slow walking asylum claims and refusing any attempts to add more funding for judges/asylum claims processing, etc.

 

Seems like building a system where the only difference between your detention centers and concentration camps is the reasoning behind imprisoning its population is pretty bad! Do you think he ever thought, hey what if the next president isn't as cool and benevolent as me to these people.

Also what did he do with all the people who had their claim rejected

Obama didn't build the system, you know that, right? Though I admit that by 2014, any attempts to better fund the asylum system were definitely going to be passed through the senate by Mitch McCo---lmao i can't even finish that one.

I know you hate this part of politics, but like it or not, political capital can generally only get you a few big things through, and that's only when you have total control of both branches of congress at this point. I'm guessing that better funding the asylum system was not where political capital was being spent in 2014, but I also don't remember much about the Admins efforts when they were called on the housing problem.

I do think context and intent is very important when using the word "imprisoning" as well. These people need to stay SOMEWHERE while waiting for their claim to be processed, especially unaccompanied minors. I don't think the Obama Admin was actively trying to imprison and treat these people like criminals, do you?

If their claim was rejected, they were sent back...that's kind of how the legal asylum process works?

Uhh, yeah, again that's how the legal asylum process works. They spend a lot of time assessing your claim, checking to see if there's an active danger, etc. If your claim is being rejected for legitimate reasons after an investigation is done, that's certainly not "meant to be a punishment or discourage others from coming."

Not even bothering to do the legal asylum process, lowering the amount of asylum seekers you're willing to admit per year, changing what counts as just cause for seeking asylum, actively demonzing the asylum seekers that are coming here as "illegal aliens" and "an invasion" meant to bring out country down, cruelly separating all family members regardless of circumstance, and then creating purposefully terrible housing conditions and cracking down on things like education and recreation within those facilities, on the other hand, is very much different and you know it.

But Obama just as bad as Trump Democrats just as bad as Republicans yay it's 2016 again.
