The thing about Ukraine, I think, is that the name somehow denotes a border or outlying territory, and "the Ukraine" comes from "the ukraine [of the Russian Empire]" instead of a proper noun. May be misremembering

 

Precisely. For Ukrainians, it’s insulting because it undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty. It has to do with the prepositions в and на in Russian and how they relate to denoting a place.
