I hardly watch any non comedy tv lol

  2. Lost felt cool at the time, and TV hadn't peaked yet. If you didn't have HBO your options for quality television series were quite low. I had fun watching it at the time but these days I have no desire to revisit that show.

My comments on Lost as a good or bad or show are actually out of line now that I think about it. It has really nothing to do with the abuse that Evangeline Lilly went through during her filming. Everyone responsible for her abuse should be in the spotlight right now, they all suck and should be held accountable. That's my edit.

Where’s your wife in all this? Never been married so I don’t *actually* know shit, but I feel like with in-laws the common wisdom is to be a united front about that kind of stuff. Like even if she’s not as upset as you she should still be covering for you lol

Also what a piece of shit, it’s hilarious how Trump has made so incredibly explicit just how curmudgeonly middle aged/old conservatives actually are. Just walking balls of repressed rage and resentment towards the world that turn into petty children when they don’t get their way

It’s been really upsetting for her because she has watched her parents get suckered into this whole charade over the last few years. I’ve been surprised to see her just explode on her parents over gun rights and immigration because they push her to a breaking point I honestly wasn’t previously aware she had with them. She’s always been very close with them, but this has created a lot of friction. There was one night where they had Fox News on (as always) and Trump was droning on like a blithering idiot (as always) and she just blurted out “oh my god haven’t you had enough? I just hate the way this man speaks. He’s a buffoon!”

Her parents got upset and then Trump went on a rant about how he’s innocent and she, again, just let loose with “oh okay sure! You’re innocent because you said you are and I believe you because I’m an idiot!” They said that was enough, that she was calling them idiots, and so she agreed and chose to leave.

Another night she got into an argument at the dinner table about gun rights and it got so heated that her dad got up and left the house while her mom said “I don’t want to talk about this anymore” and walked away. My wife doesn’t like to get involved in politics, but she has been surprisingly outspoken and angry. I’ve never really seen that side of her before, but I can see the damage it has caused.

Tonight she was quietly supportive of me, but didn’t say too much because she could see I was on edge and ready to blow. She stood with me and held my hand, told me she agreed. I think she’s just tired of arguing with them about this all the time. She’s a head teacher at a daycare and she works with children with special needs. She’s incredibly sensitive and the moment he mocked that disabled reporter really pissed her off. She also grew up in a heavily conservative, Baptist church with me. That’s not who we are anymore as adults, but I think she feels the same anger, betrayal and resentment that I feel regardless. We spent our childhood being told by these adults that Jesus wanted us to treat others with love and respect, that Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. We were told to turn the other cheek and serve those in need and to give wholeheartedly and willingly. I remember going with her to soup kitchens and doing Angel Tree donations in Detroit together when we were only 10 years-old. Now we’re the adults and those same people who raised us seem to have either lied to us, turned from their morality, or simply never believed what they were instilling in us in the first place.

I don’t know how to properly express how it makes me feel or how it makes her feel. I just feel completely lost sometimes, like I don’t understand my purpose or place and it’s fucking devastating.

Your story reminds me of someone on Twitter who shot back at people saying “Don’t celebrate Roger Ailes’ death. He’s still a person,” as they told a story about how his creation turned their loving grandparent into a scared, angry person because they’d watched so much Fox News. And I’m so sorry that you have to go through that with in-laws.

I’m worried my grandma might be turning that way. She moved into an old folks home last year and when my mom and I went to visit her, Fox News was onin her room. My mom asked “Why are you watching this crap?” and her reply was that was was what most people in the home watched for their news. She didn’t see as propaganda or state television. It was just the news. That’s frightening.

I was obsessed with Lost and it really helped me through my depression when I was in high school and early college.
The Evangeline Lilly story is gross though.

I think its probably a bit of a combination of the "turned from their morality" and "simply never believed what they were instilling in us in the first place". There is a pretty big disconnect between the teachings of the christian faith, and the realities of life. I think this can cause some people to simply ignore the realities of life. The idea that poverty is a problem that needs a massive global solution, and can't simply be solved with charity and prayer makes it harder to sell the whole "god is good" idea.

Listening to one side, you have to actually wrestle with your faith and try and come up with an answer that makes sense.

Listening to the other side, you can convince yourself that it can be solved by charity and prayer, and those who it doesn't work for are just lazy and deserve to be poor. Sure you've perverted your religious teachings, but at least you don't have to wrestle with any hard questions!

So I think what you see happen is that there are people who never really believed "We should help the poor" as much as they believed "God says we should help the poor". In order to keep their views on God consistent with the world, they have to warp and twist what "help the poor" means, making it look like they are turning from their morality.
