I like those maps that show the vote but in my opinion they do a terrible job of relaying the population differences. Take Michigan where I live for example, the county I live in is right next door to the one I grew up in. My current county is one of most educated in the United States (has the University of Michigan), the one I grew up in was hit hard by the recession and is still fighting its way out of that.

My current county had 179k of votes, 128k for Hillary and 50k for Trump. The county I grew up in had 65k votes, 40k for Trump and 25k for Hillary. So it only makes sense that huge swaths of rural America would vote Trump but those huge swaths have such small populations relative to the blue ones.
