Kondo has basically wrapped up some pretty everyday, ordinary Shinto/Buddhist concepts that the Japanese act on every day and packaged them for a western audience. Greeting your house and feeling joy sparked by inanimate objects is obviously not a practice Japanese people are engaging in every day, but the Shinto/Buddhist concepts behind the practice are seen in every day life. Itadakimasu is something said before every meal in Japan, thanking everybody and everything that got that meal to your plate; animism is common in Shintoism, and many Japanese still feel weird about owning things secondhand as they are a bit superstitious about the energy of owning something someone else once did. There are various ways this shows itself in Japanese culture, a lot of them being socially accepted practices that people follow because, well, everyone else does.

I think there are some things to take from what she's saying, though the immediate western obsession with her definitely has a lot to do with how foreign a concept much of this may be for the audience. I did refold my clothes the way she teaches and it works lol. I have no idea how she is seen in Japan (I don't think a couple book reviews and some anecdotal opinions from their employees like that article talks about really gives us a clear picture), but she's been known in Japan for awhile.

Thanks for explaining that philosophy more. I am all for Americans buying less crap, and if she inspires people to live more simply, that's great. I think it's wasteful to only buy new things and never consider used items because of bad energy, but I suppose that's more of a cultural thing.

Not a problem! Don't get me wrong, it's not completely unheard of for people to buy used items, but there are a lot of socially accepted cultural practices that are pretty embedded like that; they are a culture thousands of years old after all, and quite conservative at that. They also have a huge issue with waste (plastic in particular), but they're also incredibly efficient at recycling it (they even make uniforms out of used plastic).

I appreciate what she says because I really enjoy those aspect of Japanese culture and think there is a lot to learned from them, however I completely agree that it is pretty counter intuitive to purchase expensive dividers in an effort to be more minimalist.

 

Yggy is currently arguing with a bunch of journalists who are very offended by the implication of Yggy (and uh, chomsky et al) that journos and programming coordinators with major networks wouldn't be hired if they weren't going to represent the boss's intersts

i really hate how "progressive" has to come to swallow up the dem socialists. which, you know, there are a million ways you could call Bernie or AOC 'not real socialists' but I think the distinction between "progressive" and - at least - "socdem" are real and its worth it for that distinction to remain in place, for the demsocs themselves if nothing else. The difference between progressive and dem 'socialist' is the difference between Kamala and AOC you know
